Hi everyone, I have been out of commission for about 4 weeks now because I was turning a bowl for the first time and ended up with a piece of wood in my left eye!!! I was wearing regular eye goggles and it still got me. I have had to go through 2 procedures to remove all the little pieces and have had to stay in the dark for 2 weeks now because of the need to keep my eye dilated and having to use drops every 2 hours. I really learned my lesson. Always wear a full face shield when turning bowls.

Take care,

Janet :(

Ouch Janet! I've been trying to get used to wearing full face protection and actually have a full face respirator that isn't too uncomforable. I've had metal in my eyes before and had to have it removed with a grinder.. scary! I hope your eyes heal okay!

Sorry to hear that Janet! Hope things heal up all right.

The first thing I was told to buy, before my lathe, was a full face mask. And there are plenty of times I'm glad I heeded that advice. I wear it no matter how 'simple' the turning might be.

Janet,
I second and third all of the ouches you received on this thread.. I haven't gotten any in my eye, but a piece hit just under my "safty glasses" before I got my face shield....Make it a practice, your face shield should be like your seat belt in your car... put it on before starting the lathe.

Hope you get better soon.. will be thinking of you.

Good grief, Janet, I'm really sorry to hear that! But I'm thankful it wasn't worse. Keep your chin up, m'lady, and I'll second the face sheild. No such thing as being too safe.

Holy smokes Janet, that sounds about 100 times worse than a scratched cornea. What a bummer! Hope you get back to normal quickly. Then immediately get yourself a Triton Powered Respirator - full face shield, no breathing dust or CA fumes and even a hard hat in case the ceiling collapses on you.[:0]
