I love this wood. Bois de Rose is gorgeous! It's another one that's hard to pick up the color in pics, but these aren't too bad. The beet red streaks are fairly chatoyant. I just wish it would keep that color forever. The pen is a Dayacom Professor in antique silver. I sanded with 600, 800, 1200 and finished with 3 layers of pens plus. That's going to be my last pen for 2024.

I picked up a few of these some time back from Griffin Exotic Wood. It's hard to find, impossible to import, definitely not cheap, and something you do not want to announce you have if you are crossing any international borders. I should think that it wouldn't draw much attention unless it was a larger musical instrument instead of a pen.

Very Nice and a great color. I snagged a bunch of them several years ago from an instrument maker that considered them as scrap. A few of them are a nice dark bing cherry red like yours and a few that look almost black. I'm hoping that there is still some red color left on the inside when I finally get around to turning them.

Your not kidding about how hard they are to find. I always explain that the wood is from a very rare and endangered species of true Rosewood called Boise De Rose and that the only place on earth that it grows is in a very small strip of tropical forest on the East coast of the tiny African island of Madagascar.

From what I have been able to find, it has virtually been illegal to import or export both the wood and products made from the wood for nearly 50 years. Most of what is still available in the US is from companies that acquired it legally back in the mid 70's before it was classified as an endangered species and became banned from import and export.

Some pretty rare and cool stuff! - Dave
