I have a 3/4 sized mixed breed lab named Suede who is always chasing things. She has solved my mole and ground squirrel problem and made the squirrels nervous as heck. But this morning she topped herself.

I let her out into the back yard and immediately heard something fairly large skitter up one of the trees. Suede was running all over the place and very excited. I looked around but didn't see anything in the dark.

Long story short - she found a small adult raccoon and caught it. The first time she tossed it around I got her to let go and went to get leather gloves and a shovel in case it was too injured to get away. It did try to run away and up a tree but Suede caught it by the back of the neck, picked it off the tree trunk, and eventually killed it.

It was a real chore to get her to let go of the body which I placed over the fence in case I need it. She doesn't appear to have any marks on her and has recently had her rabies update so I hope the adventures over.

I can't get mad at her because its in her nature but I sure wish she'd leave the raccoons alone. I wonder why she's so gentle with our cats when they're smaller than the raccoon?

I agree! Our dog hangs around with our house cats but chases the outside cats, of course the outside cats run from her and dogs usually chase anything that runs away.

Altho I feel for the raccoon, I'm sure glad your baby is OK!

As good as the dog is that gets rid of a racoon, be very careful. We've had several instances of rabid racoons in the last couple of years. Even with the vaccination, be watchful. Rabid racoons and foxes can be very dangerous to humans also as they are not afraid.

Hope your dog remains healthy and give him a cookie [:D]

We have two dachshunds, BooBoo 14 year old smooth-haired and Schnitzel, she is nearly seven years and a mix of a wire-haired and long-haired dachshund. BooBoo never caught any animal, and when we walked him in the past, he never realized that squirrels going up the tree and not into the brook he is staring into to find them there.
Schnitzel on the other hand has kept the hunting instinct that breed was bred for and she so far caught two black birds while in flight and just this Sunday, she caught and killed the largest rabbit I ever saw - must have weighed 6 pounds or so. Amazing what shreeking sounds a rabbit can make when it is in distress.

Our terrier-schnauzer mix loved to chase squirrels so much, that he'd sit on the koi pond filter and look up in the trees. His head would go from side to side almost like a lighthouse as he scanned for them. He's 17 now and now longer able to see, hear or chase them. The time draws near when he'll be chasing them again as he moves to a better place.

Well, 24 hours and 2 power outages later and Suede is doing fine. My wife called the vet but forgot to ask how long the gestation period is so we may not be out of the woods yet but, hey, we LIKE trees - don't we!!

P.S. Last night my daughter called because one of my granddaughters had a high fever (even for teething)that didn't seem to be radically affected by Tylenol or Motrine. My wife and I went over for a couple of hours and, while the fever didn't recede like any of us wanted it to, the 7-month old was active and responsive so I hold her to pay attention but that I thought the child was fine. Well she called the family doctor's service and he called back after we left. She called us at the restaurant to tell me that the doctor had said the same thing that I had almost word for word and she wanted to tell me that I had been right.

I thanked her and hung up but then had a thought. Is my being right such an event that it has to be announced?

Rudy,
My grandfather had a dachshund that was absolutely fearless. I was visiting him one day when we heard an awful commotion coming from across the street from his house. One of his pigs had gotten loose, a 200 pounder at least. The dachshund knew that it did not belong outside of the fence. That dog that would not have gone twenty pounds after a big meal was backing his way towards the barn pulling that pig by the ear. The growling and squeeling was impressive. The dog did not turn loose of that pigs ear until it was inside the fence. When the pig was locked away the dog went and laid down in his favorite shady spot like nothing had happened.
