I was messing around the other day making a black bean dip/spread (kinda like hummus) and had a sudden Aha! In case anyone here likes to piddle in the kitchen and likes this sort of stuff, I decided to post the recipe.

The dip was missing something, and it turned out to be just a dab of something sweet.

Here's the recipe if you want to give it a shot.

1 can blackbeans, most of the liquid drained out.
1 medium or small onion
3-100:)D)cloves of garlic depending on taste
2 cubes of chicken bouillon
3 tablespoons of raisins [:0]
cayenne pepper or chipolte pepper to taste- I would avoid chili powder

Saute in veg/olive oil the onions, garlic, and raisins with the bouillon (add a bit of water). Allow to cool enough for the food processor.

Add the sauted stuff with the blackbeans. Whip it up in the food processor until an even, dippable consistency.

The good news is, if people know that you put raisins in it, they'll be skeptical and you get to have it ALL for yourself

Nice use of the raisins. They are frequently used in a lot of sauces. It's either A-1 or Heinz 57 that uses raisins... don't remember which. I have used it bbq sauces and a steak sauce I make. Ya just can't quite tell by tasting what that sweet is :)

I didn't know it was common in other sauces.

When I make the above mix, sometimes I add a bit of curry to the mix and also increase the raisins--- amazing how much it taste like the chutney you get at Indian restaurants.
