I am interested in turning a couple of pens for an Entomologist. Anyone casting insects, insect parts? Would be interested in seeing what you guys have done.

I did a pen a while back that was all dragonfly wings. The customer supplied the wings and I did the rest, it came out looking pretty good. Wouldn't mind doing another one if you have the wings.

I've always wanted to kick an ant mound, roll a CA covered painted tube in them, then cast it. You'd have to keep them small because you wouldn't want to turn into them when turning away extra resin.

Skye, you could spray the finished blank with lacquer, so long as you rubbed it down with 0000 steel wool to scuff it up a bit.

I have also thought about the fire ant mound thing. Would be easy to collect them using a half an apple as bait. You could "quick kill/dry" them in denatured alcohol or lacquer thinner (lil bassards have it coming!).

Dragonfly wings and/or butterfly wings would be great ideas. Actually, the Tiger Swallowtail butterfly is the Virginia state insect. That might be an idea. Neil, will send a note later. Thanks.

Not on purpose! My son made a pen and used PR and pressure for the voids and we ended up with an ant in the amber color! Could not have turned out better! I do not know if it was originally live or dead. He gave it to a friend! Alice
PS I did get a picture but the ant wasn't visible in the photo
