Hi gang!

I've been making mostly bowls lately and now I have a question about finishing with Enduro. I have a bowl on th lathe - red elm, very dry - and I've sanded through to 220. I have small bottles of Enduro Sanding Sealer and Enduro Gloss. The bottles have no instruction labels on them.

After sanding and wiping down wit Acetone, I let the bowl dry (acetone evaporated) then wiped on a coat of Enduro Sanding Sealer.

My question is: What now?

My thought was to sand again from 220 through 400 and maybe MM, then wipe on the Enduro Gloss and let it dry over night. The next day I thought I'd back up to 400, sand and MM again then add another coat of Enduro Gloss.

This is all just my intuition, though.

Any advice?

Sorry I haven't posted much lately. Got a new love in my life :) I love Spring when a young wood-turner's heart urns to romance!

Hope my absence won't stop you from making comments on Enduro.

Hi Julia,

Here are Wayne's Enduro Instructions which is for pens, but should work with bowls too, I imagine.

I'd use 220 and wet sand with the sanding sealer to fill all of the cracks, etc. SS should dry in a minute or two. People disagree as to how long the gloss should be left to cure until its okay to sand/polish, but personally I allow a week to dry but probably 3 days at minimum.

Hello Julia,
I called General Finishes the people who make Enduro. Are you using the Seal A Cell Sanding Sealer? And are you using the water based Enduro? If so here is what they told me. (These instructions will apply whether it is Seal A Cell and Water Based Poly or there other products) After applying SS you can use a 0000 Steel Wool or 600 grit sand paper. Don't go back to 220 that is way too coarse. SS takes from 1 hour to 2 hours to cure.

So: SS, let dry/cure 1-2 hours, steel wool or 600 grit sandpaper (he said you could use 1,000 grit). Then apply your Enduro Poly. Let that dry 4-6 hours. Rob, the guy at General said he puts on a coat of Enduro in the morning and one in the evening so 8-12 hours apart. After 1st coat of Enduro and cured, you can sand with 600 or higher grit and then apply an additional coat of Enduro. That is what he told me.
Thanks.

I use up to 5 coats of sanding sealer on my pens to help fill the pores. I usually apply each succeeding coat within 3-4 minutes of the previous coat. I let the sealer cure overnight. I then dry sand using micromesh to remove the inevitable ridges. I then apply three layers of top coat in rapid succession (3-4 minutes apart) and allow to dry overnight, again. After the top coat cures, I mm out the ridges, apply Renaissence Wax and assemble the pen.

Thanks! Whew, I thought maybe y'all didn't want to share with me since I'd dropped off the scene for a while.

I'll be putting the Enduro Gloss on tonight.
This stuff is pretty thick.
Since it's water-based do you think I could thin it with a bit of water?
