OK I've only been turning pens for about 10 months, so I'm not what any one would call an experienced turner, I don't even own a wood lathe[:I] But I have turned close to two hundred pens and a bunch of bottle stoppers :) I keep reading about how hard it is to turn PR, I've been pouring it and making pens for about 8 months, and bottle stoppers for 6, I've only had 3 blow up, all while drilling [B)], I've read how much trouble turning DIW is, I had one blow up out of 8 so far, and that was a stupid mistake, I got in a hurry :( I've read how hard it is for some folks to get a decent CA finish, I've only had problems with a few pens when I first started, I was using Locktite CA Pure junk [}:)]
So I'm thinking to my self, Self I says you got your act together don't cha [^][^]
Yesterday I got a good size piece of Paduk, a real nice board, as it cooled off last night, I started cutting it up into 3/4 and 7/8 blanks along with a dozen or so 2x3 chunks for stoppers [:p]
This afternoon I HAD to turn a pen from it, it was screaming at me[:p]
I took my time resharpened a tool that for me is the equivalent of a skew, turned the blank round and drilled it, set it up between centers, and started turning what was intended to be a nice TI gold Cigar :D did the cap end first, looked good, nice grain not too bad of a start, got started the lower barrel, and I thought I had gotten shot it threw a chunk off as I neared the tip that left a dent in my safety glasses, Now I understand, and this particular dish tasted horrible:( Now perhaps I won't be so inclined to come up with some acerbic comment or even worse think Jeez what a dummy this or that person is, I think I know who the dummy is and I feel sooo stupid [:I][:I][:I][:I][:I][8]

Geez, Ken, you are one pathetic loser! hehe :D[:p]

Been there, too. Some blanks are just destined for failure, I think. I mean, it can't possibly be our fault, right? lol [)]

At least you were wearing your glasses, that's a silver lining, right? Did you manage to save the blank, a little CA surgery?

Ken; Good thing about the safety glasses!

Some woods and Dymondwood I coat the blank end in thin CA to prevent the unsupported end grain from splintering. CA fills in tiny cracks that cause failures.

PS. I've had some spectacular blowups, and everyone I know has too! :(

It goes with the territory.

Glad you had your glasses on. You got to learn a lesson without paying the price of tuition.

With regard to blanks, some are just land mines looking to blow up. No amount of preparation will completely rule out a blowout. But I have found, especially with blanks you cut off the board yourself, that you can improve your chances by "resting" the blank after any significant cut, such as you do when you first cut it, or when you drill it out. A few hours is good, a day is better. You would be surprised how much wood can "squirm" after it is cut. And always check the fit of the tubes before you glue them in. Any amount of force necessary to dry-fit the tube in place means you should hit it with the drill again.

Chuckie, I'm not trying to hype any body's stuff, but the three thickness of CA from Mannie at http://woodenwonderstx.com/WWBlue/NewGlueWS.html is hard to beat, and so are the prices, I know in the machine shop we used all kinds of Locktite products, and I know they make a Professional CA, never tried it, but since I starte3d using Mannies CA which is about 1/4 the price of the Locktite, I don't get a blush on oily woods, I think wiping the blank with accelerator or Denatured Alcohol helps a lot, and gluing with the thick CA has pretty much eliminated blow outs UNTILL YESTERDAY :(

Anyone that hasn't had a blow up, please raise your hand........... See we all have had it happen, some just haven't yet.
I like the CA from Mannie. I tried others, but won't again.

Ken , the rest of your pens make up for that ONE ! With MY hand in the air , I say it's happened to me , but I'm an EAGLES fan and I "GET OVER IT" ! (in case you didn't know , it's a song ) I know , I make it sound easy . IT AIN'T !! I have my nightmare story coming soon , involving a pretty blank I got from Karl . After you read it , you won't feel so bad . And would you share some of that PIE ??[)]
