Dying blanks, where to start?

I live near a military base and have had a few request for Drill Instructor ribbon pens, I haven't seen anything out there and was considering trying to make my own.

If there's primer videos that can be recommended to get me started, pointing me in their direction would be greatly appreciated.

I do have a couple of quick question;
-What's the best wood for dying for blanks? I'm guessing maple but
-What's a good dye to use for the wood?

Consider printing on labels and casting. There are several who cast and can make them for you.
