I haven't used alumilite yet but I have used poly resins. I use powder coat paints ( I bought red and black from harbor freight) because they are cheap and work well for the basic colors. I also use a lot of powder pigments from www.artstuf.com/. I especially like their luster pigments. Also their hilite pigments, flouresent pigments, and some of their regular powders. You need to be careful which pigments you choose if you want bright true colors. Many of their colors are for making acrylic paints and , for instance, many of the yellows have red in them so it's hard to find a true yellow for mixing with other pigments to get true colors. I just got some lemon yellow in today and though it does have some red in it, it looks to be closer to what I need for mixing with blue for green. I really like their ultramarine blue for a true blue color. It runs about $7.50 for a 1/4 lb.

Dyes are liquid and will give you a transparent to transluscent blank. If you are going to use a dye for Alumilite, your best bet is to use their dyes. They are EXTREMELY concentrated and you do not need much plus the carrier is made with polyol which is one of the components of Alumilite so you have much less chance of messing up the ratio. I have also had good success with Transtint as long as I did not try to put too much in.

Powder colorants are not dyes but will color the resin nicely. Powdered colorants are going to make the finished product more opaque which is a desired traits in many cases. In that case, just about any powder that is completely dry will work fine. I have even used blue chalk like you use in chalk lines for construction!
