I know this has been brought up before but I would like your opinion on which face shield whole or half works the best for dust and also what works best for vapors, paints etc..

I can't go on turning or any woodwork until I "suit-up" doctors orders!
Thanks in advance very much! Alice

Respirator?

If you are talking about a respirator, there are different types of filters available. There are "particle" filters for dust, asbestos, etc. and there are "organic vapor filters" for fumes, vapors, paint, etc.

On some respirators you can 'piggy back' multiple filters to do both particles and vapors.

If you are looking for a 'face shield' that has some air flow and filters, you might look up a Trend Air Shield. Its a little pricey, but a good product. I have tried one myself, its on my Christmas list.

Try this link -http://www.envirosafetyproducts.com/category/trend-airshield.html

Go to home depot or safey supply store and look for a 1/2 face respirator mask if your working with dusts and other chemicals just tell them what your doing and they will get you the right cartrages.

I just sent off a bunch of full face respirators here but they went quick. They can get quite expensive as well.
One of the best things I have seen for this is called a PAPR. Expensive but you will see.

Now these look funny when your wearing them, Kinda like your heading off to mars. But I have 4 of them at work (Brand new Never been used. Just charged the batterys tested them to ensure the blowers work and now they sit in rubbermaid boxes for over a year.
I guess we don't bother using them because we just use SCBA's for everyhing) but I did try one on and WOW! Its like wearing a really light motor cycle helmet with a light wind of clean air blowing over your face. perfect for a person working in a paint booth I assume. But I would love to get one of these into a nasty, dusty, chemical smelly workshop area and test it out. They are over $1000 each but work well IMHO. If they ever decide to off load them at a cheap price at work I will be all over them for sure.

My favorite high protection is a supplied air mask. I used one in the spray booth when I had my woodworking business. If you don't need to be too mobile, they work great. At my shop, I put a squirrel cage fan in the office, about 20 feet away. I used 2" pvc pipe to get the air to the spray booth. I then used a central vacuum hose to go from the 2" pvc to a belt at my waist. I used the central vac hose because it is almost smooth on the inside diameter and will not cause much pressure drop. From my waist, I ran a really thin hose from a medical supply used for a CPAP machine. Very light weight, very flexible. That hose went to a standard rubber canister dust mask that had a plywood adapter for the hose, and the other canister blocked off with saran wrap. It would provide a positive air flow to my nose and mouth. No dust coming in at all, no noise, and nothing heavy on my head. It was similar to this one, but lots cheaper.

Probably clear as mud!!!!!

thanks to everyone who answered! I ended up getting a Trend airshield .Unfortunately it came broken. I got it at Sears on line. Good deal $100. off plus another sale that was over the day I bought it I got another $30.00 off! It is the one with the 8 hour battery and before postage $269.00!
Because of it coming broken Sears is giving me another 10% off for the replacement one!
Now for the bad part. Are there any other ladies out there that has this product? I think once again that it was made to fit a guy. What does not fit tight is the elastic down under the chin and around the face. There is a fair amount of gapping which probably defeats the purpose of the mask.
So any gals out there that use this or anyone with any other ideas? Thanks and Happy Thanksgiving! Alice

PS I got a separate half mask for VO

Cheez, I didn't know that guys and gals have anatomical differences above the neck. Why didn't they tell us that in health class? I've not used the Trend, but don't they work by pressurizing around the head with filtered air? As long as the fan is running, I doubt that dust will get in. In fact, I would think that you need some gap for proper air flow.

I use a Triton and it works great. You could get it to fit better by using foam self sticking insulation. Measure the gap and then get the size that fits closest and you can cut it thinner if necessary. This should make a good seal. You could also contact the company that makes them and ask if they have a smaller attachment for smaller faces.

I think it has to do with the size of ones head. This is the second item I found was way too big for me to use.

I just read the directions for the Triton Air shield again and it states in the booklet that if there is not a proper seal around the neck dust protection is not assured.

Did you get it fixed and running? So I guess it needs to pressurize the hood, but I wondered about the motor if it is pumping air against pressure. I wouldn't think that the fan would be real efficient, but it must be designed to build that pressure.

What did the doc tell you about skin exposure to the dust? Is it long sleeve shirts and barrier cream for now on? Luckily for me, all my allergies are related to food. I am living on a pretty restricted diet these days, but can work all the wood I want. Darned immune systems!

Hi Rich,
Well, I sent the other air shield back because the hard head strap was broken. I just got the replacement in the mail and would you believe that the head strap is also broken, in the same place!!!!! What is going on? I thought this was supposed to be a quality item?! What's the chance of getting 2 shields with broken straps!!!!!!! Has anyone else had any trouble with this? I think I am going to call the company tomorrow and find out what's up. I called Sears again and there is a hold on shipping any more so I cannot even get a replacement! I wonder if the company could send me a replacement head strap? I am not even sure if it can come out.

My problem isn't allergies. I have severe heavy metal poisoning and have become hyper sensitive to everything. I have to have 4 hour chem. IV treatments twice a week to remove the metals. They make me sick but are helping over all. After about 30 treatments things should be ok, but the metals have caused other problems that also have to be addressed that I won't go into
well, I hope you have you and everyone a Happy Holidays!

Update: I have had 2 Trend Air Shields come with broken head straps. I talked to the company and they are aware of the problem and are sending me a replacement head strap to put in. Apparently the company that was making them was using recycled glass in their plastic recipe and it was too brittle. They have the new ones so if anyone has the same problem just call the company.
