Here is a link to an excellent article on a dust control device that is newly released by Powermatic. The information the author writes about is dead on as to why dust control is so very important to anyone working with wood ... especially exotics.

Maybe this will allow you to decide what must be done to protect your health. At the very least the article will tell you a bit more about Air Filtration Systems (AFS). ;)

Yep. Good article. Everything said is quite correct in terms of eliminating as much dust as possible to make the workplace safer. At our club we have collectors and filters and everyone is obliged to wear a dust mask.

One thing you should notice is that they are not selling health insurance. That is something you will need if you ignore the dangers from inhaling dust for any length of time.

I find it interesting to say the least that many folks just don't believe in the dangers of continued dust inhalation.

I figure they must have a secret stash of money put away for doctors, hospitals, etc. because they are gonna need it!

I think many people are in the same situation as I am. I BARELY have enough money for the basic tools and woods that I have, and I have student loans, etc that require attention. I don't even own my own house yet, and my truck is on its last legs...

So as much as I REALLY need dust collection, I can't afford it. I haven't bought a new tool in ages, but I still cannot afford dust collection. I think I have less than ten pen kits in my shop at any given time, and only one or two of those cost more than 2 bucks...

It's not that I don't want to invest in my future health; it's that I cannot afford to do so at this point...

ER visits and doctors, however, are free, so financially, it is not as big a gamble as it would be in the US...someday I hope to have a DC, or air filter, but it won't be soon, sadly...

Hi, it is not about money and not what you can afford in doctor bills, its about "feeling good".Any sick billionare would give up his money just to feel good again. Carl

rereading the article, something tells me that powermatic paid to have them interview their employee.

While I agree with most of the guts of the article, some of the things said are out of line.

The first line of defense of a woodworker has always been a dust mask of some kind. He's suggesting that it should be third. (I notice that powermatic doesn't sell any dust mask type products, but they do sell both air filters and DC units)

I'm personally looking for better persoanl filtration right now than the paper masks that I sometimes "forget" to put on in my shiop that has a good DC and had a passable air filter. (I will be replacing the air filter with a better unit, but am more concerned with the personal filter first)
