Due for a new grill and thinking of adding this one to the fleet

Mike, I am sure that's a good grill, but having owned just about every brand/type of grill - charcoal, gas, and smokers, I now own a Big Green Egg. I have had it for several years and doubt if I will ever own anything else. Actually I doubt if it will ever need replacing in my lifetime. Just ocassionally change the felt seal around the lid. Kinda expensive but will last a lifetime and I guarantee the flavor will not be beaten. Just my two-cents.

I personally prefer the custom built grill I have. I traded it for a gun cabinet. My cousin made mine and I built him a 10 gun hutch with knife display.

I will have to post a pic of it.

I wanted the one Wendell bought----just a bit out of my price range----built mine out of a 20 gallon compressor tank----should last forever.

I wish I had something like that. I prefer the flavor you get from charcoal; but sometimes, when time is short, it is nice to have the option of gas. I have one of the classic 55 gal. drums with a side firebox.....most of my cooking is smoking rather than grilling.

Since I don't know what your cooking preferences are, I can't really make an intelligent recommendation other than to say that getting the optional side firebox would probably be a choice you would "NOT" regret.

Grills

I have two grills. One is for the weekends when I have time to light the hardwood charcoal, and the other is propane powered. Both are made by Weber, and I would not trade either one. I love my Weber grills.

I have had an Egg for about 15 years now its the best investment I ever made. Haven't had a gasket on it for over 6 years and still works fine. I would have went through 6 or 7 of the other kind so it ends up cheaper in the long run and boy dose it smoke great mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

The issue I have is cooking surface. When I grill, I tend to try to cook for a full week (Lou, Lillian is planning on attending the NOVA meeting you know. I'm not responsible for any payback she deems necessary ). The grill I have now is about 680 inches of cooking space, without warming racks. I need something at least that size or I'd be at the grill all day. The thing I like about the duo is that its both gas and charcoal. My preference is for charcoal, but there are times that I want to grill something larger that needs to slow cook for hours at a constant heat. So I'm either getting a straight gaser and keeping my current Brinkmann Charcoal Smoker grill or getting the Duo and possibly letting the Brinkmann go (I'll likely keep and use it as a warmer or something.)

I looked at that one about 2 years ago but opted for this one with the optional fire box instead -

Main reason was I prefer wood or charcoal to gas.

I have this same one but with the optional side fire box. I usually cook on it at least once a week. Whether it is burgers/brats/hotdogs or porkbutts(turkey during the winter holiday season) I only put fire in the offset firebox.

I add a chunk of Florida Bay, and some Rosemary after I put the meats on the fire then only add charcoal as necessary.

I hate to do it Randy but I have to top you. I have a 275 gallon oil tank converted into a pig roaster/smoker. It holds 3 150# pigs at a time or I have stuffed it with 200 racks of babybacks at a time. It is a great party cooker.

Regarding the Egg and charcoal vs gas, and perhaps Jay can comment, I have found that the Egg is so much faster getting charcoal to cooking temperature (I only use natural lump charcoal) that I can usually begin cooking in about 15 to 20 minutes from the time I light. I only use newspapers and a few wood scraps from the shop for kindling. The extra time is used for an extra beer :). Another advantage of the Egg is cooking time. You can do a 4 to 6 hour turkey on one charcoal load, and only have to check the temp about ever hour. Wow, sounds like I'm on commission, but I just really love this cooker....

I have a medium egg and do 20hr cooks with only 1 load 10#butts 14# birds. I also go out and chip the Ice off of it for a New Years Prime Rib
I use 1/3 of a small 1/2" X 6" starter stick to light it and never take more than 20min on a bad day to start cook. I cook on mine about 3 to 4 times a week in summer and at lest 2 times a week all winter only go through about 10# or less of lump a month. I also us smoke pellets works great.

I have the original charcoal-only Char-Griller and I absolutely adore it. There's no better grill, IMO. That said, the grill you linked to has got me all kinds of excited - well, except for the price...

Well, the charcoal grill is $139 and the gas grill is $189. So if you bought both it'd be $328. $30 discount on the Duo. The more I look and read reviews, the more I think this is the one.

If those numbers are accurate, that works out to somewhere between 2/3 to 1.1 lbs of charcoal per session. I will have to go out and weigh up a pound of charcoal to see what it looks like; but have to say I am scratching my ear just a little.

Randy, those numbers are pretty accurate. I can grill twice a week for 1 to 2 months on an 8lb bag of lump charcoal with the EGG. When your finish grilling, just close the vents, the coals die and any charcoal left is available for the next time. The EGG is incredibly efficient.

Cost savings include uses minimal charcoal, will NEVER have to be replaced (over 100 lbs of ceramic) unless major impact causes a break. Over time these factors will pay for the grill. BUT that is not the reason people who own the EGG are crazy about it. IT'S the FLAVOR. I can honestly say that I have never had anyone eat a steak, turkey, chicken or ribs off the EGG that they didn't think it was the best they ever tasted. Do a Google search, you will find hundreds of testimonies singing the EGG's praises.

I admit though that it's not for everyone. It's very heavy, needs either a "nest" with rollers or a table built to install the EGG in. The body of the EGG can come in contact with wood, it remains that cool on the outside.

It's not very portable, so not good for people who move often. And of course the price is certainly a factor. The mini size is almost portable, but has limited capacity.

LOL, no I am not an EGG salesman, nor do I own stock in the company, just love the product....

It's the wrong time of year to buy a grill, my friend... wait until the end of fall. We bought a HUGE grill last year when they were clearing them out, and got a steal on it.

Plus, they were having a special where you bring in an old propane tank, and they give you a new, FULL tank for free (as a gift for buying the grill). I took one in that was too old to fill any more, and they still accepted it. Nothing like getting a new, full tank for one that can't be used!

So does this mean I can officially sign up the two of you for the picnic? Sorry, can't help with the grill decision, but if you want, bring it with you and we can break it in at the picnic.

Cheers!
