Alright I am probably setting myself up for some abuse of how little I know about metal working. I recently made a homemade Jameison style hollowing rig and was trying to make a tear drop scraper for it from a hss mini cutoff bit. When I tried to drill it I could it hear it laugh at my drill bit even after freshly sharpening it. So my question is am I crazy trying to drill hardened HSS, or do I just need a harder drill (not sure what the drill I was using is made out of).
Here is a picture if of what I am talking about .

I got it to work by putting a washer on the set screw (a shourt 1/4 inch bolt) and pinching the scraper betwean the tool post and the washer but it was a pain to adjust and would like to have a hole in the scraper to add more stability to the bit.

Mike I just went through this-----Carbide tipped.
You might get away with a concrete bit.
I bought a Carbide tipped bit and worn it out real dang fast.
Low rpm's and a good cutting oil are a must.
That is the only way I found and it's a bear.
I am now working on getting some A2 and sending it out to get it hardened.
I am NOT a machinest but I do help support one. There are just some things that have to be custom built---hehehehe

Thanks Gary the HSS is pretty thin so if I can get it to cut it should go quick. I use anchorlube cutting fluid when ever I drill metal and it seems to work great.

Dario - I considered a couple things includeing the diamond, titanium and carbine bits but mostly I considered finding people that knew more than me once a google search did not come up with anything. I usually find I save money in the long run by talking to people that know what they are doing.

I agree...can't count the money (and time) I wasted doing things my way LOL [:D][B)]

Hopefully Paul H, Mudder, Fangar, etc. chime in soon!

Mike,
You need Cobalt HSS Drill Bits and a Cutting Oil. The Oil is made to lubricate drill bits and handle the high heat. In the old days, we made a putty dam and kept the bit wet. Messy... The metal curls are really Hot and Sharp.

You could also use a Dremel type tool with an abrasive bit and grind a hole throgh. Keep the metal cool though...

Hope this helps...
