Drilled too big

I was making a Gent II and it calls for 2 drill sizes, 10.5 and 12.5. I got distracted and drilled 2 perfect 12.5 mm holes. This is a gumball blank in PR in white and green. Can I fill with clear or white pr and redrill? Or is there another kit that uses 12.5mm ?
Thanks,

I'd use 30 minute expoxy with 1 or 2 drops of acrylic paint mixed in. Use blue painters tape to seal off one end, stand the blank on end and fill it full of the white epoxy.

I might run a chainsaw file or sandpaper inside the existing hole to give the epoxy a little "tooth". In my experience, the epoxy bonds better than PR (depending on exactly what acrylic the original blank is made from).

I don't see why it wouldn't work, I do something similar all the time when I sleeve stuff that needs a new or different sized bore, and I make friction fit pen caps out of aluminum and fill them with Alumilite and bore the close fit size in them that is needed for their pen body. (Alumilite -the tan stuff, haven't tried the white- makes a good snug but non or very low wear press fit against other plastics or brass and aluminum.).

The only thing I can see that might matter is if the resin you cast in the hole will bond well to the blank itself or not. I imagine epoxy would even if nothing else does, but it should be no problem to experiment and drill the stuff back out if it doesn't work well.

You could still have problems with the 2 mm difference (cut thought the blank where only the epoxy lives).

A better solution is to by another blank in colors that compliment the bubble gum blank. Drill both of these blanks to 10.5. Then make 2 identical pens. One with blue ink, one with red ink or pencil, etc. Sell them as a set. DAMHIKT:)

FWIW: Triton Roller Ball and Triton BP uses the same 12.5 and 10.5 drills. You could easily make a Triton Pen and Pencil set by using the pencil mechanism on the ballpoint.

This is a custom PR with sweetgum balls that I got from a pen gathering. Will 5 minute epoxy work or do I need the 30 minute? Would epoxy or PR shrink and not bond to original blank?

Roland:
Although when I've done this, I've used 30 minute epoxy just for the extra strength. I can't see why 5 minute wouldn't work. The main reason I recommend epoxy over PR is just because you could have shrinkage where the "new" pr meets the "old" pr.

There are as many "fixes" for this as there are members here. Some here would fix it by turning a dowel, glue it to the blank, then redrill the dowel.

THE REASON I SUGGESTED the pen and pencill set is because the 2 MILLIMETER DIFFERENCE on the lower barrel of a Jr. Gent II, puts you EXTREMELY CLOSE. to going all the way throught the original blank. MEASURE CAREFULLY the amount "meat" left on the bottom barrel of the Jr Gent. You can determine the "meat" amount by putting caliper to both trim rings for the bottom barrel (remember, one trim ring is bigger that the other).

If either caliper reading is less than 12.6mm you will cut away all of the "original" blank.

Respectfully submitted.

the finish bushing size for one end is .012" less than the drill size. (.480 vs.492). i would say big problem. your original material even if dead center, is gone.

Thanks for the replies guys. I guess I will try to reproduce that blank and have two pens. Guess that was the wrong blank for 1st tome Gent II. Note to self: always start with smallest bit!

I have a bucket in my shop that's called the "humility bucket". It's where I putmy misques that can't be fixed. I can at least reclaim the brass some day.

The "humility bucket" started as a Maxwell House Coffee can. Later, it grew to a 5 gallon bucket. It is currently a 55 gallon drum. When I start thinking "I'm hot stuff", all I have to do is look at "the bucket" to regain my grounding.

Don't beat yourself up over this, adjust and move on. As they say at Waffle House, "if you don't break any eggs, you can never make omlets".

I , for one, think a Triton Sweetgum ball pen and pencil set would be fun to own! When someone says "I've never seen a Sweet Gum ball pen", you could say back "well, of course, I have a perfectly matched pen and pencil set" :)

Thanks for the encouragement, Andy! Wildthings, thanks. I will gladly pay for the new blank. I went to Hobby Lobby and they were closed today. I was going to try to copy it. Thank you!

Roland, did you ask who brought the blank if he has another.
I thought it was chris (justturnin).
