Neither, or either, depending. According to the American Heritage Cookbook, "Forcemeats, as they were generally called in old cookbooks, are nothing more than mixtures used to stuff meats, fish, and fowl. Forcemeat derives from the French 'farcir', to stuff. Today, they are generally called stuffings or dressings."

Actually they are one and the same. The difference comes from how, or I should say where, they are cooked. Dressing is usually cooked as a side dish, while stuffing is actually put inside or "stuffed" in the turkey, roast or whatever you are cooking. For those who want to know where I got his information, Discovery channel off the TV had a special show on the origins and traditions of Thanksgiving dinners. In it they interviewed one of the premier makers of Stuffing and Dressing about how their product was made, and he showed them using the same ingredients being put into different boxes, one labeled Dressing and one labeld Stuffing. When asked, he gave the reasons I stated above, and said they called them differently to retail better in different parts of the country. That was my source of information. [:D][:D][}:)][;)]

It's stuffing when it is cooked in the bird, it then is transformed into dressing when it it taken from the bird and put on the plate. That is factually taught at LSOL. (Les' School of Logic)[:D]

We call it Dressing. And it is cooked out side the bird.

I believe in the south we call it dressing.
On the west coast my parents called it stuffing.

It's stuffing in my neck of the woods, but over here, I can really start a war with what we put on our pasta, gravy or sauce? lol Hope everyone had a great day!

Dressing....and I agree with Curtis, I don't want anything that's been shoved up a turkey. Besides, it wouldn't cook very good in the deep fryer where all turkeys should be cooked [:D]

Oh man, I'm with you on that. Thus, we should all call it Dressing.[:)]

<br />Grew up with stuffing. Now live in the midwest and it is dressing.

And Gary, pasta has SAUCE or butter. Gravy goes on turkey, roast beef, mashed potatoes.

Sorry Eric, Noodles has butter, Pasta has gravy, Sauce comes out of a jar :)
