With all the different gagets that we have to pull dust away from the lathe, I was wondering if anyone was using a modified down draft table. The usual hood running off of DC always seems to get in the way or takes up to much space. With a down draft table you have nothing in your way. I realize that you have larger chips, but this could be handled by a screening system before the filters. Am I missing something here?

weight and stability would be the issue I would be worried about. Most homemade downdraft tables either have pegboard or some other type of porous surface. Most lathes are too heavy for this type of surface. Maybe if you could weld up a metal grate similar to the racks you see in home depot or sams club you could do it, but at what cost?

That would be a great idea but I don't know if I have room for it. You would want it wide enough around the lathe to be able to catch all of the sawdust and chips. I wonder how it would do with fumes?

Babyblues, not too worried about the hair part!! I think this darn thing will work with your lathe sitting right on top. A slide out screen to get rid of the big stuff and you got yourself a clean dustfree area to work. Hmmmmm........wheels turning, construction starting soon!!

Bob , my cousin uses a table he made from 3/4 plywood , for his flatwork . It works really nicely . I'm sure you can find some big screen somewhere . Good luck with this project ! Pics please !!
