Has any one ever tried to stick anything on a tube with double back tape? Do you think using the tape to hold snake skins on while casting with PR or Alumilite would work? If not, why?
Thanks in advance.

D?F Tape

3M makes a tape called VHB (very high bond) We use in the sign industry. It is clear and paper thin and comes in various widths. This may be the same thing that Curtis mentioned.

Thanks guys for the input. Do you think the 3M VHB tape would hold a snake skin tight enough to the tube to cast? Also, where would you buy this tape?
Thanks
Ben

I'd be hesitant to count on this working with polyester resin. When PR cures it generates heat which may well cause the tape (and skin) to buckle. Go slowly. One blank at a time until you get some experience.

Good point Lou. I didn't think about that. Curtis uses Alumilte and from what I know it doesn't create the heat that PR does, that would explain why it has worked for him.

Lou is correct, go slow. I have no experience with snake skins or ever will. I am deathly afrade of snakes I have trouble looking at a picture of one. I think I have seen the tape at Home Depot or Lowes. I used to get it at a Sign supply Co. I think in Boise you have a Co., Denco or Sun Supply.

Thanks for the replies. I do not have any casting experience at all, much less casting snake skins. I just about have all the things I need to start casting so it will be a new experience for me. Lou, that makes sense. I didn't think about the heat. I have a problem with CA plugging my sinuses real bad so I would like to find an alternative. Maybe there will be a heat resistent tape I can find. Thanks Nick for the leads. These places are close to where I work and live.

Have you tried "odorless CA"? I don't like it for finishing but it should work for gluing skins.

Seems that you may have gotten your questions answered. Another thought I had after I PM'ed you is the same comment Lou made. The heat may cause the glue on the tape to release. Good luck and let us know how it works out.

But, casting computer labels stuck onto tubes works just fine so you will probably be ok.

Do a good turn daily!

Alumilite creates a lot of heat when curing too. When I take a block of 5 blanks fresh out of the pp, it will be hot enough that you don't want to hold it too long.

I can't comment on real snakeskin sticking, but one thing I do know and that is, that faux snakeskin has worked for me using the 3M DS tape on the brass tubes.
