This sander has always been inconvenient to use to its full potential, being that the business ends are 90° apart. Went to Lowe's and bought a heavy duty swivel, got it all mounted and I just use a dowel through the top plate that mates up to a hole in the bench top. With the pin in, it's rock steady, just need to turn a knob for the dowel pen. Super simple design and it works wonderfully.
