I've found a few places that sell them, but most of them are mounted or otherwise treated in such a way that the seller is charging more for work put into them...I just want them to turn into pens (or try to), so it seems a waste to buy something and break the mount on it or turn off a nice polished surface.

But, it is very important that they be longhorn horns, not just any breed of cattle.

College Station and your looking for longhorns?

Tandy leather has some in Austin. They are'nt the nice large showcase horns but they are longhorns. Most of the horn is hollow though......

I made powder horns using cow horns. I bought the horns from a slaughter house and boiled them about an hour to remove the soft core on a coleman stove in the back yard. They were a bit ripe and attracted every dog and critter for blocks. The next door neighbor asked me to do this when he wasn't home next time. I scraped them with pieces of broken glass to smooth them. The horn is hollow except for the very tip. Easy to polish and carve with reasonably sharp tools.

I was thinking the same thing..those are hollow. But, that could be a good thing. Horns and antlers are very unpredicatble when it come to cracking and movement. Because they are hollow, you could cut them into strips and segment them into stripes or something along with another material wood or plastic, which would allow the bone to move with the weather while it is a pen, thus reducing the potential for cracking.

Jeff brings up a good point. As I recall, and it's been quite a few years since I had one in hand, the horn is about 1/4 inch thick or so. Done like the shell blanks (strips glued around the tube) would likely work better than anything else. If done carefully, you could bevel the edges so that no gaps appeared.

Here's one on ebay as an example http://cgi.ebay.com/Unmounted-Longh...236?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item53e5b41274
