Our daughter has been visiting us this week. Her husband, an Air Force airman, recently was deployed to Kuwait, his second mid-east deployment in two years. Last night she was very upset. I asked what happened. She had checked her bank debit card account on-line and found that it had been wiped out, except for about $5.00. In addition, the night before, about 3 a.m., she got a strange call on her cell phone from a man, not Andrew. She hung up immediately. Her caller ID indicated it came from Kuwait. Today, the credit card company called and told her that the biggest purchase on her card looked suspicious and they restored those funds to the account. Hurray for a good company. The other two would have to wait until later in the day for investigation. But, the company said the charges had been filed incorrectly. That, coupled with the cell phone ID should be able to pinpoint to the perpetrator. Sadly, it is probably another GI that got into Andrew's personal belonging while he was in the shower, the only time he is not in possession of them. This morning our daughter e-mailed Andrew's commander and proper investigative authorities. The jerk will be caught. He is just lucky I can't get my hands on his throat. I'm ....well...I can't say it here.

Frank,
Glad things are working out for your daughter.. know the feeling about somebody being into her bank.. had the same thing happen a few years back, evidently a waiter failed to return my card or I failed to pick it up, can't say now which, but inside of a few hours had about $3000 run out of my bank account... the bank caught it and called me because of an $1800 charge in Oregon and a $400 charge in New England on the same day and within a couple of hours of each other... they also re-instated all my funds and investigated..
I Appreciate your SIL's service.. disappointed that another serviceman would stoop so low as to steal from his buddies.

A thief doesn't care who he steals from. We had a sailor stealing from his shipmates in berthing on one of the ships I was assigned to. His buddies caught him in the act and gave him a "blanket party." He was carried off the ship on a stretcher. If the guy's buddies catch him, he'll be in for a lot harder time than if his commander does.

Glad your daughter was able to work thinks out with the bank so quickly.

Frank,

Sadly the saying that "there is always a snake in every forest" is real. As if being separated with your loved ones is not hard enough...

I hope things get squared right away with your daughter's finances.

When I read the thread title, I thought "uh oh, what did I do NOW?". I'm glad it wasn't me - I'd hate to be on Frank's bad side! Frank, I'm very sorry to hear of this - I can't imagine how frustrating it must be for your daughter and her husband. Hopefully it wasn't one of our men and women in uniform, and hopefully they catch the person. I wonder what the new Iraqui law says about theft? I know some of those countries had some pretty draconian laws - if the perpetrator is over there and is punishable under their laws, you might actually be satisfied with the punishment.

Best wishes for a successful outcome, and please be sure to send our thanks to your Son-in-Law for his service. I'm glad to hear that he's still OK.

Sorry to hear this Frank. Be sure to pass along our thanks for their service.
Letting the commander catch him is too good, I'm hoping for the "blanket party".
Glad the bank and CC company are helping.

Thanks all. There were three unauthorized purchases. One very large that about wiped out the account and two small ones. The large was reinstated by the next morning by the CC company. The smaller ones probably will be by later today. There is no doubt the crook will be caught. Yes, he's fortunate I'm not there and that he will be handled by UCMJ (that's Uniform Code of Military Justice for our non-vets) instead of Kuwaiti law. He won't have his hands cut off. My son-in-law could pound the jerk into the ground but won't. He is level-headed and a gentleman. Not like his hot headed dad in law.

Frank, hope it all works out and glad the CC company was cooperative. Hope they catch the thief and handle it to everyone’s satisfaction.

For what it's worth it doesn't take long to scam a card. One night we went out to dinner, paid the nice waitress by CC, she takes off to the register as normal and brings it right back for me to sign. Less than an hour later almost $2000 in charges to the card on the internet were done by her when she got off right after we left. Took a while but we were reimbursed. Also had some big hits on a debit card from a "pay at the pump" gas station, those numbers roll up inside the station and one employee needed parts for their car on the internet. Also got that back but the punk is still employed at the same gas station, although I won't stop there any more. Be careful!

All of this is certainly not as bad as one soldier stealing from another, that is a whole different class of trash!

i've had my identity stolen as well (it sucks to not know who you are [;)]). it was a pain in my butt for about a week, but VISA is very good about returning things to normal. my funds were reinstated relatively quickly and now it's nothing but a faded memory. unfortunately, there are a bunch of idiots who think this is a victimless crime, which it is far from... hope you get a chance to have a little "chat" with this guy sometime frank!

Yeah, sounds like a blanket party coming down the pike. I took part in one of those on a guy with sticky fingers. The next day the 1st Lt. asked the guys that took part to take one step forward. We all stayed put. The whole platoon payed for that one. Nobody in the platoon was upset at us as we all had each others back.

I'm sorry to hear that Frank. It does happen but not as often as people might think. I hope it wasn't something as simple as paying for a meal and letting his card go with the waiter.
Most places the service goes, there is a Status of Forces Agreement in place that prevents servicemembers from being subject to the laws of the host nation.
Servicemembers are still subject to US laws AND the much more restrictive UCMJ. If you get charges filed against you under the UCMJ, you are pretty much guilty until proven innocent.

Frank,

Trust me when I say that your credit card company is very interested in finding out the real story. Also - because it is traceable, you will, in all likelihood, have the opportunity to see the person who did this. What goes around comes around is going to happen soon - and with your patience and understanding, you will realize more than a simple wish for justice. You may actually watch someone ask you for forgiveness when all is said and done.

What will you do then?

In the meantime - realize there are people who appreciate your situation and hope for the very best for you and your daughter. Isn't she fortunate to have you?

All the best,
Roger Garrett
