I was thinking the other day (at times this is a badddddddd thing), doing craft shows and people asking me how is this done or that done? Also they ask questions like do you make this or that and you mention you make a certain type thing but do not have any more. I used to have a picture albumn on my table of past things I have made and can still make but due to space constraints have done away with it. I was thinking there are a couple shows where it would be possible to have one of those digital picture frames set up and photos of your work and tools can be scrolled all day long.

Anyone ever do one of these and used it for this purpose??? If so how is it received???? Is it a selling point??? Also what type do you have and do they make any battery operated ones for those shows where there is no power outlets???? Thanks for the replys.

IMHO it's a good idea to show the way you do pen for your pontential customer, I saw the same things in Tasmania early this year at the Hobart market the person as a generator TV and video showing how he turn pen in 20 minutes I was there ( want to check how he was doing ) he sold 9 pens most of the was FP and acrylic

I was going to suggest a video too, but someone beat me to it.
Must be the 12 hour time difference.

Seriously, if you're going to give them visual aids to help, you might as well
do it as best you can. If photos are good and help show the process, videos
might be even better. Besides, people might skip over photos. In the video,
they can't.
(which makes good editing MUCH much more important..)

We keep a digital frame on our table that scrolls through pics of various pens that we have made. I think that it helps entice people to give the booth a second look. The rest is on us.

Another possibility?

TV screen, attached to computer. Cycles pictures all day

Thanks, will have to check them out. I got the idea yesterday watching QVC selling them and I almost bought the one they had but it could not be operated on both AC and battery. I do a few shows that are outdoors and one that I am in the middle tables so no way to get power and was wondering if they do sell them battery operated. Will look into this more for sure. Technology is great. I do not have a notebook and don't want one so this might be the answer.

I have two frames on my display, one scrolls through various pens, the other has pics of the pen making process, no video, but pictures of each stage from blank to pen.

People help me. If you are doing this what unit are you using??? Is there something I should look for??? And would definetly love to hear if someone knows of a good reliable battery operated one. Thanks.

As far as power is concerned, I would be willing to bet at least 1 of my cats that you could run it all weekend and then some with a small deep-cycle battery and an inverter. An even better idea would be to find somebody that knows a bit about electronics to build a simple power adapter to convert the 12 volt battery to whatever voltage that the device requires. I know that I can run 3-4 100 watt lights, a drill, bunch of other stuff off my DC battery at the shop (No power there, and I don't aways want to fire up the generator)

Just my .02

(Late Addition) Just checked, a Kodak 7 inch diag. display takes 5 watts, and it's 12 volts DC. You would be much better off running that direct off the battery rather than the losses of an inverter and then the power adapter.

Do you know what brand you have and is it battery capable???

Honestly, I have no clue what the brand name is. We got it at Bed, Bath and Way Beyond and chose that one because it had nice looking wooden frame. It does not take batteries. We plug it into one of those portable power pack thingies, sorta like this one:

I am going the video route. I picked up a used portable DVD for $70 and am working on a video of pen turning and birdhouse turning to answer that ubiquitous question on whether or not I make them. Also a good attention grabber. The DVD has a battery that lasts 6 hours for my outside shows that have no power. You could also do this instead of the picture frame idea. Just need to transfer your pictures to a DVD.

I've got a simple 9 inch or so digital frame. I did a set of pictures from start to finish on making a Rollerball pen. Not sure just how many pictures in the set but enough to show each step. One BIG hint. I made a back drop screen using a Dark Blue sheet and hung it behind the machines, drill press, lathe, workbench etc. That put all the focus on the step being shown and hid all the clutter that would have shown in the background. No one even noticed that it was there, until I pointed it out.
I put the slide show on repeat and set a pen that looked like the one being made in the pictures in front of the frame, sold the real star of the show right away, and have sold several more that way. I've gotten a lot of comments about it and now I'm looking for a better one and thinking of running a couple of them.
