I am looking to buy a new digital camera for everyday use. Currently I have a Canon Powershot A85 and it seems be failing. There are lines through most photos and quality has really slipped.

I would like a camera that will take closeups of pens, reel seats, etc as well as typical photos. My wife will use it also which speaks volumes on the concept of "easy to use". I don't care about video capability and a bunch of other features. The only settings I have ever used on my current Canon are AUTO, and flash on/off and closeups.

I would like to stay around $200. I'd appreciate suggestions and opinions.

Thanks

There are so many now, most of them quite good, that it makes it hard to say "buy this one". I would look at reviews such as the ones here ... http://www.steves-digicams.com/

Whatever you buy, if you just stick to the auto function you may be missing out on getting the best photo your camera is capable of capturing.

You might contact Canon about the problem you have with your camera. They had a problem with a part that caused problems like yours in a series of caneras they sold. I have an S1IS I purchased used and started having a problem with it when it had already taken 6500 photos. I contacted them. They sent me a repair form and FedEx shipping label by email. I sent the camera to them, they replaced the part and shipped it back to me. Didn't cost me one cent. Their customer service is absolutely fantastic.
Then if they do repair it and you still want to buy a new camera you can have a spare. I now have the S1IS, a S2IS, and a S3IS.

Hey I have a Nikon D40X for sale. It comes with a case and 18.55 lens. Lens description includes this: DX SWM ED Asphrical oo-0.28m/0.92ft -0- 52.
I need a good band saw and the proceeds of this sale will go toward the new saw. I posted this in the proper forum as well and was responding to your message.

As said, there are many to choose from that would fit the bill.
I suggest you check in at DP Review. The greatest digital photo forum on the 'net.
And, be sure to include in your budget a decent tripod for steadiness.
