Finally starting to get back out in the shop some after my accident in May that shattered my femur and other problems. Just to get back in the mood some I went to our local AAW meeting this past Saturday, had only attended maybe two monthly meetings in the past six months since the accident. This time we had a penturning demonstration. Several members turn pens so this was one of those demos where lots of folks wanted to show off their knowledge. To be honest it got rather ugly in my opinion. The demo person did a lot of things differently than I did but I figured it was his demo so I kept my mouth shut. The demo person was also one of those "my way or no way" type of guys, which just added fuel to the fire for the know-it-alls. I finally left early and headed home, figured some time in the shop was more worthwhile that that was going.

I guess the only reason I bring this up is to ask why folks can't do it different without trying to convince me that all I do is wrong? Ask any two penturners how to glue in the tubes and you three different answers. Isn't that OK? I am always looking for new ideas but that doesn't mean what we are already doing is wrong.

Just venting a little . . . haven't been on here much lately but now that I am getting back in the shop some I will be here more often. Not sure I can turn any large bowls right now but I do feel up to some pens! [8D]

Too true Ray. A s afellow turner put it to me "they all turn up with their Lathes and their egos".
I sometimes wonder if the order should breversed to give a truer picture.[:D][:D]

Times have changed
Our kids are kids are getting worse
They won't obey their parents
They just want to fart and curse!
Should we blame the government?
Or blame society?
Or should we blame the images on TV?
No! Blame Canada
Blame Canada
With all their beady little eyes
And flappin' heads so full of lies
Blame Canada!
Blame Canada!
We need to form a full assault
It's Canadas fault!
Don't blame me
For my son Stan
He saw the darn cartoon
And now he's off to join the Klan!
And my boy Eric once
Had my picture on his shelf
But now when I see him he tells me to myself!
Well, blame Canada
Blame Canada
It seems that everything's gone wrong
Since Canada came along!
Blame Canada!
Blame Canad!a
They're not even a real country, anyway
My son could've been a doctor or a lawyer rich and true
Instead he burned up like a piggy on a barbecue
Should we blame the matches?
Should we blame the fire?
Or the doctors who allowed him to expire?
Heck no!
Blame Canada
Blame Canada
With all their hockey hubbabaloo
And that b**** Anne Murray too
Blame Canada!
Shame on Canada
The we must stop
The trash we must smash
Laughter and fun
must all be undone
We must blame them and cause a fuss
Before someone thinks of blaming us!

(with thanks to South Park and apologies to my friends up north)

I think this is a big part of what I like about the IAP community! While we all have our own way of doing things, we all realize that there is no one "right" way to do things. There are many right ways, and there are a few wrong ways as well. There are also a lot of ways to do things that are, like, "OK, if you want to go to all that work, it's not wrong by any means, and your pens turn out none the worse for it!"

I can show you how I apply my CA/BLO finish, but it is a long way from the only way to do it! Experiment, find what works for you! If there is one rule of thumb I would give to everyone, it is: If somebody tells you the "right" way to do something, ignore them! [}:)]

Scott.
