It was early and it was dark. Traveling at 65 mph on a 2 lane state highway on my way to work with coffee in hand. All of a sudden, out of nowhere, 3 deer crossing the road. Only had time to say "AHHHHHHHHHHHHH". Never had a chance to hit the brakes. The middle one didn't know it could fly. The minivan barely complained. Decided to turn around and head back the 7 miles toward home when the engine temp light came on and the the gauge read "H". Heading back, seen the deer on the same side shoulder. Darn, no antler! LOML had to come get me. Checked Kelly Book on the van and just worth a little over $2K. Insurance will probably total it:crying: and darn -- No Antler!

Update.....The insurance company did total my van but I got more than I expected --$4000 - $500 deductible.

Your avitar seems strangly appropriate for this post. Glad your OK. I just had a close call Friday night. Actually it was the car in front of me. They must have just missed that deer by inches and I just missed them when they slammed on the breaks. It's that time of year.

Just talked to the Sheriff. He said he came from the same area where I hit my deer. He had to put down a 6 pt buck because it had broken legs.

I traded some pen making work for a giant 75 pound box of cut up antler, it lasted for nearly a year of pen making. When I ask the guy I traded with if he was a taxidermist he said no, we was a highway maintence worker......they were from road kill.

Glad you were not hurt.

I can feel your pain about the damage to your van. A few years back, my wife was driving along one of our very rural roads early in the morning when she spotted a doe crossing the road. She slowed down just like I've told her to do because sometimes a buck will follow the doe across. Just as she passed the doe, another deer (a yearling) ran out and slammed into the side of the car damaging the passenger front quarter. She felt so badly about the deer being hurt that she just had to go back and check on it. As soon as she found a safe place, she turned the car around and went back. As she got near the spot, she slowed down to see if she could spot the deer and the same deer ran out in front of her and smashed up the front of the car. The same deer hit twice by the same car within 5 minutes. Even then it wasn't dead. She considered putting it in the back seat of the car and bringing it to the vets, but thankfully the deer wasn't interested and he got up again and ran off into the woods. It's bad enough hitting the same deer twice without having to listen to the guys at work ragging on me for having to replace the interior of my car as well.

Just found out today my boss' parents process deer, and he is getting me some racks. What do I need to do to go about prepping these for working? Do I need to "dry" them or let them cure in any way?
