This probably should be in Polls, but I don't know how to set up a poll format, so I'll just ask for your comments here..

In another forum I frequent, question was raised about whether daylight saving time made sense, what was the general opinion of the idea, etc...

Opinions seemed to run about 1/2 and 1/2 that it was a silly idea that only created confusion... what are your thoughts.

I work in the medical field. Specifically I'm a Biomedical Technologist (fancy term for the guy who fixes medical equipment) who takes care of allot of rural hospitals in our region. All of our hospitals have central monitors. A central monitor is a computer that collects critical data such as ecg wave forms and displays it at the nurses station so they can monitor many patients at once. These computers can't be set up for auto DST because once a year 1 hour of data will be lost. If a patient goes into cardiac arrest or has some other trauma during that 1 hour and the data is lost, lawsuits will occour. Therefore on the Monday after DST I must drive to every location and manually change the time on the central monitors. I usually end up with 5 hours of double time off twice a year. In summary: I love DST!

Interesting article, Jeff. Thanks for the link.

A note from the past: I went to a small Baptist college in the '70's. (Yes, I know I'm old!) One of the arguments against DST was that we shouldn't mess with "God's Time." I never quite figured that one out!

I'm confused with you on that one... my argument was that time doesn't change, only the measurement of time changes and I find it silly to adjust that measurement... it really doesn't matter if daylight begins at 5 am or 6 am.. the designation of 5 or 6 am is arbitrary anyway. Daylight will begin when it begins. In my youth as a son of a share cropper farmer, we worked from daylight til dark (or as Mom often said, from Can until Can't). When it got light, we got up and milked and went to the fields.. when it got dark, we quit and milked and went to the house.

I know DST wasn't set up for the farmers, but I still think it's an arbitrary idea that isn't really necessary.
