This tree turned into a two day job. Looks like three truck loads.
Thought you folks might like to see the last load we cut this morning.
We are going to spend the afternoon resawing and stacking this blanks for storage.
Here's a couple of pics---the blank on the tailgate will end up as a popcorn bowl----Yup a biggin:biggrin:

Dang Gary that is gonna be one big popcorn bowl. You must really like popcorn.Or just wanna make a big bowl.Nice looking wood you have there, any desire to share? You know, spread the wealth a little.

Ronald ---that's a good ideal------I could cut blocks out of the center so they would be all heart wood and sell them. That tree is over a 100 years old and the wood has some great color.
The popcorn bowl will just go into our showroom inventory---I just like making the monsters even though they don't really sell very well.

Old Blue was sold about 18 months ago---I bought this 1999 Dodge and a 16 foot box trailer. The plan was to do more out of state shows. The way it worked out I just run it back and forth to the shop getting it repaired.
We had planned on doing a show in Fl next month----just have to wait and see if the Dodge is running then.

Gary,

Do you just cut them and put them to dry? I am having trouble with my elm and walnut splitting. I cut them into bowl blanks and put them to dry, but they are still splitting. I even tried the method of rough turning the bowl and then wrapping in paper bags, but still some splitting. I also cut the logs in the winter, so I don't think it is a sap issue (although I live in Texas, so not really cold). Any ideas?

Kyle

Kyle-----drying blanks is always a pain. The trick is to dry them slow and use the wood before it can split.
I stack and stick mine where they can get air. I put up a bunch of Apple last fall and lost about 25% of it because of splitting. Really was kinda happy with those #'s since Apple is loves to split.
I try to turn over my bowl blanks within a year of cutting them. I either use or sell the wood.
Anyone in the neighborhood want to stop in and pick some of this up---let me know.

Gary,That's some fine looking wood,am I the only one who sees a face in the wood in the last pic?no I'm not smoking anything.

Where the tree forked and went 6 directions it was about 5 foot thick---you would not believe some of the wood that came from that section of the tree.
I am going to let the wood sit for a couple of weeks and adjust to the shops enviroment before I turn any of it.

Kyle, do you seal the wood in Anchorseal or something comparable?

Great question. On my rough cut lumber, I just use paint on the end grain. On the bowls, I hadn't used anything and was just rough turning the bowls as soon as I cut them into squares. I put sandind sealer (Rockler) on one, but it didn't seem to make a difference. Does Anchorseal work for you?

Kyle

Kyle - I use Green Wood Sealer from Woodcraft on the end grain when it is fresh cut. Once I get around to rough turning the bowl I place the bowl in a plastic bag to let it continue drying. I turn the bag inside out every day or two to let some of the mositure out. Eventually, maybe after a month or more depending on the size and how dry it is, I take it out of the bag and just let it sit on the shelf. All this happens in my basement. You do need to expect to lose some due to cracking but hopefully they just become smaller bowls then you planned.
