I would like to add some thoughts about the cypress wood. Although it may look like a softwood, its in fact pretty dense, much like Yew or Juniper. But the end grain is hard layers with foam like, chipping out cells between them. Tried to fill them with CA but it would consume a galon without any improvement. In the end, I did beeswax&oil finish, especially saturated this spots, let cure overnight and sanded the whole bowl all grits again, another wax&oil and that helped a lot:)

Both look very nice! The grains in both look good. Great job on them. Bowls are still on my bucket list to try one day…

Its not more difficult that pens. And its much more freedom. Ot course, its harder to find a good bowl blank than pen blank, but segmenting or sandwiching is possible. Bowl gouge is like a U shaped skew, and is not necessary in the beginning, scrappers will do the job too. I can share more, or you can anytime send me PM if you would need an advice about turning bowls. AND THAT APPLIES TO ANYBODY HERE, just keep in mind that Im on the other side of the planet than most of you,so there is a time shift:)
