I bought a 5"x48" board of African Padauk last weekend for $25 at Woodcraft. So this pen has about a half dollar worth of wood. The 5" gives me enough room to crosscut the board and feature the end grain. The grain pattern reminds me of the belly of a snake. I like the pock marked texture of the wood pores using Pens Plus finish. I'm very happy with the result.

Thanks for looking!

Pretty pen and workmanship. I've used lots of Padauk over the last year. I bought a 1" thick board 8' long. The wood I purchased is more orange than red. I bought it because the university my son works for colors are orange. I agree with all of your comments except the picks in the wood. I thought it was a pain to keep the dust out of them to eliminate white spots. Nice job.

Very nice! I have a board of Padauk that changes color from Light to dark with streaks, that I have turned cross cut to show the color change. It looked nice but it wasn't easy at the time turning all of that end grain. You did a great job!

I would have never thought crosscut paduk. I have a couple of 6' boards of it in the garage waiting their turn.

That really makes it look like a different species of wood.

Such beautiful work.

Beautiful wood, beautiful pen! Looks like your efforts paid off!

I'm curious what finish you used. Looks like it preserved some of the characteristic of the grain. Is it CA? Or something like Melamine Lacquer?
