I was selling a modified slimline with lignum vitae on it and thought Id put a new Cross refill in it. When I put it in, twisting it would not show the tip! I compared the two refills and the new refill was about 1/8" shorter.

Has anybody encountered this? It brings into suspect all the pens I sold and whether a new refill purchased will fit. Not good!

Oi ... that be very strange ...

Would it help to glue a small 1/8th" spacer behind the refill? (to the refill itself)

The latest batch of low end slimlines our turning club did at the county fair were way off as well. I was using my pressing fixture (piece of aluminum angle iron) and the refill stuck out too far. The refill was the same length but the threads were longer allowing it to screw in further. Press in the transmission to fit the cross refill as they are standardized and tell the owner to only use Cross.

Before I turned my first pen, I was buying a pen kit and my Woodcraft lathe instructor told me to press the 7mm transmission until it was 10.1cm from the nib to the top of the transmission. I've done that and never had a problem with the length of the point sticking out. I replace the refill before I sell it, too, and do compare the length of the refill that came with the kit with the replacement refill. I've never seen one that was that much shorter than the original.

the plastic end!

I ran across this problem before as well!!!!I found that the plastic end would move on the metal ink shaft,,,so apply a little pressure & press the plastic end up or down as needed....

Beware!!

I have been offered "Cross brand" (with the Cross imprint) in China for under 10 cents each.

I sincerely doubt these are the same refills Cross gets---I have no idea how you would distinguish them from the genuine article, but I know they ARE available.
(NO, I did NOT order any!!)

FWIW

I'm thinking I would measure a known genuine Cross brand refill and compare with the generic that came with the component set. Then you'll know for sure. If need be, get out your punches and adjust the transmission depth so that the refill works. Just what I'd do.

Regards,
Michael
