My pen stock has gotten dangerously low, only about 8-10 pens. I plan on making my stock shoot up to 100 pens+ by the end of this month the end of the month is in one week. I plan on being a little crazy all next week and spending alot of time in the shop. I know that it is a lofty goal but I need to do it. I know that I may have other responsibilities as well lke possibly staining, finishing, and installing some cabinet doors on a house. Any one care to take up the challenge of seeing how many pens you will make in one week?

ummmm no lol i dont want to try to compete with this one.... 13 pens a day is enough of a success for me to do once, let alone 7 days straight lol
please dont hurt yourself:frown: lol and stay hydrated, i hope your shop has A/C:wink:

luckily I live in California and the temp in my shop is not more than 70-75 with humidity around 80% I should enjoy this though I have not made this many pens at a time.

In my opinion, 100 pens is a minimum stock. 100 pens in a week is a big goal. Just stay aware of what's happening when we get lacksidasical (sp) that's when mistakes occur.

Trying to make 100 pens in a week will lead to:

  1. Mistakes that could hurt you.
  2. Mistakes that will result in wasted blanks.
  3. Mistakes that will result in less than top quality pens.
IMHO, you need to reassess your goals.

I totally agree with what Mike says, including your love of turning pens may slowly dwindle and become a chore, please avoid this situation at all costs. :)

agreed, I made 30 bottle stoppers in a month for a show and I hated it by the end of the month. Plus, my wife wasn't too happy with all the garage time.

It may be a little high but I know that I will only do as much as I know will be safe, if I find that it is becoming unsafe or I mess up a few blanks I will slow down. I truely do not think that it is very manageable to get 90 in a week but I set a high goal to push towards even if it takes more time

I think it's possible to crank out 100 quality pens in a week, but the needed assembly line takes a little of the fun out of making them. I'm afraid at some point it would start to feel like work which is what I'm trying to escape when I'm turning.

I third the above statement. It isn't about quantity, but quality, reducing stress, allowing creativity to flow and having fun.

At a show 100 IS a minimum.... I hope you made good records and concentrate on making the "proven winners' FIRST. So many "turners" get so involved in numbers that they crank out the easy stuff that DOESN'T Sell.

Be like a GOOD stand up comedian! Make sure that you go armed with QUALITY AND STUFF THAT YOU KNOW WORKS IN YOUR MARKET.

Here is an ole "pen whore's" trick. Make the quality first, take plenty of displays, put barbell "SOLD" sticker on all the empty display slots. Snatch up all those pens you made for friends and family, put 'em on a display stand with a "sold" sign---BUT CONCENTRATE ON QUALITY, NOT QUANTITY!

I agree with everyone about mistakes and quality. I made over 100 slims recently and I have not been in the shop for 3 weeks to turn. It turned into a JOB hence my little hiatus from turning for a while. + its too hot in my shop right now anyhow. I will get back soon though. However rushing through this just to get "stock" is not a good idea as people have mentioned you will sacrifice quality, mistakes, etc.....
Take your time and make a quality product.

It is not going to happen with as many pens Many things came up like needing to finish other projects. But I will maintain trying to get back to 100 over the next month or so
