A friend just gave me a set of craftsman lathe cutting tool that belonged to his father. Very old chrome plated set. They were so seldom used that they have a price tags on each tool. How old are they if the price tags say $1.60 ea? Wow , never seen anything like it , and they are in the original box.Does anyone know about how old these could be???

A picture would help. Handle styles have changed through the years and there are a few references available through antique tools web sites.

Blind guess: purchased in late 1940's after WWII

BTW: If you want to well them, I will pay you sticker price plus shipping. :D

I have a set with red handles that my uncle had in 50's. Even though they are carbon steel they served me well until I bought<s> better tools.</s> make that High speed steel tools. There is nothing wrong with carbon steel tools, they just need to be sharpened more often.

Yea, post up a photo and we can get a better idea. My main set is some of those 1950's HCS chisels. It is true that they dull faster, but the sharpen sharper than HSS. ;)

Mine have been re-handled in some nice cherry.

For the dating, the Craftsman catalog from 1941 has two sets. The normal set with the red handles sold for a mear .69, however they also sold a "Pro-grade" set that were "polished and plated" and sole with "Natural finished maple handles" These sold between $1.15 to $1.69 each, or for $10.95 as a boxed set.

Here, try this on for size. ;)
