I was sanding this blank, and stopped to ask you guys about this.

I say what looks like cracks in the blank - all running in the direction of the tube, so I buffed it up to take some pics.

Looking at the pictures blown up, they look less like cracks and perhaps are bubble tracks. Some of them have a pit on one end of the "crack".

So, what am I seeing? And, what should I do about it.

The blank is still about .01 over size, so some of the pits may sand out.

Here is the casting process.

I "made" a vibration table by clamping a palm sander to a wood tv tray table - pad end hanging off the end.

Mixed the PR with PearlEx in 2 paper cups. Put on vibration table for a while - maybe 5 min. Added hardener and put it back on the vibration table. The stir sticks were never removed from the PR until I was ready to pour.

Waited for the PR to start to set - testing with an occasional stir. Took maybe 1/2 hour. both cups on the vibration table the whole time.

Gave each cup a last quick stir and removed the sticks.

Poured the contents of both cups into a 3rd paper cup. Poured simutaneously so that the colors were seperated to either side of the cup - seemed well seperated.

Bent the rim of the paper cup to form a little pour spout - positionsed so the pour was half of each color. Again, seemed to have good seperation in the pour stream.

Poured into an upright PVC pipe mold, making a little swirling action with the cup as I poured.

The PR gelled soon afterward - no more than 5 min

Dennis, yes you goofed ,but the blanks look cool like milky way in the universe. Just something different. sometimes the goof turns out the cutest thing.I'd just finish it and see what you end up. you may be surprised.

Those are chunks of dye powder that did not get "absorbed".

I hadn't thought of that - thats why you are the expert:). So you figure where was some air in with the powder that caused it to move through the resin after the final pour? I just looked at them again, and the little pit is always at the same end of the line that looks like a crack.

Small chunks of powder were not dissolved. When you poured into the vertical mold, the chunks are heavier than the resin, so they travel until they start to get smaller or the resin gets thicker. Hence, they leave a "Meteor tail".

NOT ME!!! I just LISTEN to the expert!!!! And I have HEARD about this before. MY version lacks the passion of her version, but we are allowed to READ mine on a PG13 site---Dawn's "not-so-much"!!:rolleyes::rolleyes:

Ahhhh - ok - just the opposite of where my head was. Thanks!!

So, Phil - I did not screw up - It is Gravity's fault

It's never a screw up...It's just a chance for a redesign.

Can you sand down to it and then build up a CA finish back to the bushings?

Surely you are not insinuating that our beloved Princess said anything indecorous or unladylike? :)
