Dabbling in PR pens and would like any info on the assembly process that might prevent cracks. Most are done during the pressing of parts, tip, mechanism and caps. The cracks are at the "thin end" of the tubes. Very frustrating. Any help would be appreciated.

Take a chainsaw file and clean and relieve the inner brass tubes before press fitting. This will let the nib fit in just a tad looser. If too lose use some locktite blue on the mating surface.

I always use a tapered reamer to debur the pen tube after using the barrel trimmer. You can simply ream a small amount of brass from the inside of the tube to allow an easier press fit.

I wrap a tapered punch with 400 grit paper and smooth the inside of the tube.

All of the above methods will work. We all do what feels best to us, which is as different as we are as people.

Some kits have plating that is a bit thicker than it should be. You'll get a feeling for these over time. The black chrome is pretty consistently too thick in my experience.

Thanks Don, yes I am finding out about the different thicknesses of tubes. I have presses some in with no problems, but then, one of my best pens cracked! Is there any way to fix the cracks? The CA doesn't seem to fill it.

I just use a pair of scissors and insert the most pointed of the two ends in and scrape the inside of both tube ends. Works just fine for me. Although the scissors need a bit of sharpening now and then.
