Ok well I was driving out of my neighborhood and noticed a lot of fresh cut logs by a house. Went up and talked to the guy who was moving them around, turned out to be a friend I havnt seen in 20 years.

It was cottonwood tree about 75-100 feet tall they had just taken down, he offered anything I wanted, so grabbed what would fit in the car. :)

There was a lot of larger diamater pieces around 20-24" or so and about 18" tall,m but I have no way to cut those up so had to leave em..

So my question is: Is this a gloat? Or simply a lot of basic blanks to come?

Sorry for crappy pic, only had cell phone and it was getting dark. I sealed the ends in Kilz water based as that is what I had here. I hope that is good enough..

The cottonwood around here is fairly soft and somewhat stringy. It has a tendency to gum up tools when wet turning/roughing. With that said, it can have beautiful figure and curl and has a wonderful caramel color when finished. I think it's a gloat.

fiferb just showed a nice cottonwood pen. People really like the bark too for carving just so you know.

I've tried two Cottonwood pieces to make bowls from, one looked great but was a bit of a challange to turn due to the stringy nature of the wood. The other one fought back ferociously and ultimatly defeated me.

A friend of mine was walking through the woods near his home and found a large tree that had blown over a few years ago. It was a large cottonwood. he called me because he thought there was a burl on the roots, I cut a chunk off and there wasn't much burl figure or eyes, but there was some spalting, and some insect holes. I cut it into blanks and just turned a slimline tonight. It came out a lot better than I thought, especially for "just cottonwood". This same friend also cut a burl off an asage orange tree, and gave it to me.
