As the title says, has anyone used a Drill Doctor to convert a brad point bit to a normal bit? I have some 7mm and 10mm bits that are dull but they are brad points. I want to put them in the drill doctor and convert/sharpen them. Can it be done or are the physical construction of the two bits too different?

Go for it. You will have to go through the drill dr setup a few times though.

Just don't try to freehand it into rough shape first. Sometimes it makes the drill dr setup not work correctly

The only difference between a brad point or a twist bit is the way the tip is ground. otherwise they are exactly the same bit. it is actually pretty easy to sharpen a brad point on a grinder. But you have to be able to see how the grinding stone fits in to the v shape. you are dealing with a compound angle and need to match them both. then it is just a tap against the grinding stone. I would not recommend you try it from a written description though but If you know someone that can do it and give you a live demo you can get a lot more use from a brad point that way. after a few touch ups you will get it screwed up enough to make it worthless, then you can convert it to a twist bit.

Man, I gotta read these title more closely.......thought it said Convert Brad Pitt:eek::eek::biggrin:

Watchout Mannie, that is your subconscious mind reading what it wants to read.....

I read what I want to read all the time...... just not about Brad Pitt!!!

Those DD diamond wheels are not exactly cheap and they do not last indefinitely. Personally, I would not put extra unnecessary wear on the DD. I would use a regular bench grinder to grind off the brad point and configure the tip in the rough approximation of a normal twist bit and then use the DD for the final sharpening in a split point configuration.
