I'm getting my supplies in order to start casting PR blanks. I've ordered Silmar 41, casting molds, and some of the liquid coloring agent sold by US Composites. I have read all of the tutorials, but I don't understand the differences (i.e., when to use) the various types of coloring/pigment agents. Artstuf has: metal powders, powdered pigments, resin dyes, luster pigments, fluorescent pigments, bronzing powders, etc. Do you just buy some of each and experiment to see what they do, or is there a shortcut available to figure it out?

One good shortcut it to take a few blanks you like, keep them at your side
and try to duplicate them (one at a time) by subtly changing your recipe
and keeping track as Seawolf mentioned. You'll end up with LOTS of notes.

Along the way, you'll probably find that some of your failures to reproduce
something you like ALSO produce something ELSE you like.

It is most important to treat these occurrences as if they were deliberate
on your part. Coming up with a unique name will help to promote this idea
and cement your reputation as a master resin mixer. Just don't use a name
with the word 'breath' in it, or I'll have to hunt you down.

The liquid colorant that uscomposites sells is great but a little goes a long way. If you're using popsicle sticks to mix, I dip the popsicle stick in about 1/2 an inch and let it drain a little before I put it in the PR. I find that it's usually enough when I'm using 6 oz of Silmar for a 2 blank mold I use.

Ya gonna use that gun in your avatar???:biggrin::biggrin:

DON'T MAKE ME USE IT!

I've never had to draw my weapon in the line of duty.
Funny, people always believe me when I tell them that.
I thought they'd want proof or something..
