Tonight as I was cleaning out my shop, I decided to remove the fans from my old computer before tossing it out. While I was inside the old tower I found several pieces of aluminum that could be used for spacers in my pens. I decided to dig a little deeper and when I took the aluminum cover off the hard drive I discovered two metal disks about 1/8 inch thick. They are very hard and look sweet. Does anyone know what the hard drive disks are made of? And has anyone even thought of using this material in a pen?

depends on the age of the hard drives - I think aluminum, and some of the new ones even use glass platters - not many - but I think IBM has started to play with that material.

I believe you are rite. i did try a scratch test and they do seem to be polished aluminum. They are not as hard as I thought they were. I am going to try them out on a pen soon. I will try and remember to post results. Thanks.

If it works I would love to know. I have about 8-10 bad hard drives at work I have been planning to dispose of properly (should read, destroy with an an inappropratly excessive amount of gunpowder)

Brad is right.. Just be careful.. They are either AL or glass substrate with a magnetic layer deposited on top. Be a bit carefull as I think the glass ones are more common than you think.

Thanks everyone. After several tests I have found these hard drive disks are not the glass ones. I am going to begin working with them tomorrow morning. As I was digging through the computer I also found that the hard drive cover is a plate of aluminum. This is going to make a lot of neat spacer material between segments. I have already cut it up for use. There are so many parts in an old computer that I can use in pen making it is unreal. Now I hate myself for the three old computers I disposed of last year.
