I got a refurb laptop from Dell for my daughter and it is fine no blemishes or anything I thought a good deal. Plus you do get some support from them for a while.

I bought the Wife one of the new Dell mini inspiron's it is small and she loves it it came with Windows 7 Just the computer no monitor about $300 and you can even have Dell connect to you and fix it while you watch it's great.

Oh its a desktop computer not a Laptop

My best advice to you is Buy a Mac you will spend all your time virus and spyware free.... and it comes with all the software for Picture Editing and web site building free

Once you go Mac you will never look back

Myth - http://antivirus.about.com/od/macintoshresource/tp/macvirusfaqs.htm

And I guarantee that if Mac gains enough market share, there will be more and more viruses generated for it. Look how long it took people to figure out how to make Apples cell phone to work on other networks than ATT.

Dell,starting at $350 http://www.dell.com/content/topics/..._great_deals?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&redirect=1

Gateway, around $500 .... could also check Tiger Direct and newegg.com they sometimes have refurbished ones as well. At todays prices and the fact you can move up to Win7, it really makes you think twice about fixing or trying to upgrade existing computers.
Although if you keep your old one, format it and reload everything and it will proabably be as good as new, (whatever that was):)

What Jay said !!!

I used to work for Apple selling computers.......You never have to worry about getting Viruses, Spyware or any of that junk! I converted a number of people from PC's to Mac and they have loved it ever since. Ive own macs my whole life and never had any problems with them. And you get some of the best support around for a computer...you can go into an apple store and help you the best they can..say that about a PC company?

I get that upfront, it can cost more out of the gate, but it is cheaper in the long run

You get what you pay for

My suggestion would be to check Dell outlet for a good basic machine. They have some pretty good buys there. I have purchased there a couple of times.

Mac mini is only $500 bucks brand new (used on Ebay $300) it will even run windows too... try that on a pc. I put Norton Antivirus on my Mac Mini 4 Years ago and it has found nothing ever just my $39 per year for updates every year..... Ask.com thats for people that don't know Mac!!

Victor,

A few things to consider:

Apple has less than 9% of the computer market in the US. http://www.loopinsight.com/2009/10/14/apple-increases-u-s-computer-market-share-at-8-8-percent/ To someone who considers themself not to be a computer guy, that doesn't sound like what you want.

This is likely the only reason there are few virus problems with the Apple computers. Let's say I want to cause a lot of problems for citizens of the United States. Would I tailor my scam to only work on people seven feet tall or taller?

Next, you need to find out why you are getting viruses and how to protect yourself against having the same problems with your new computer. You need to look into a good firewall, spyware program, malware program and anti virus program. Many of these are free online. You might want to check out http://komando.com/downloads/categories.aspx?cat=Security for some free programs. If you are a ComCast subscriber, they offer the Norton Security Suite free for their subscribers.

Finally, the Dell refurbished store is a good place to get a basic computer. If you aren't a big game player or other heavy user, a basic unit would be plenty for you.

Vic,
Given the description you gave of intended uses, almost any system will work for you.
If I were you, I'd be looking for a brand name refurbished from Dell, Lenovo, or HP.
You can find fine machines for about $300.
Also look at the thread Curtis started recently.

I wouldn't buy off Craigslist unless I personally knew the individual and the system.
I'd want a machine rebuilt by a company with stakes in the game.
