Require some help/suggestion(s) please:

PROBLEM: Icons on my DESKTOP have disappeared. Have nothing but a clean blue page where they used to reside. I have run a virus scan to see if it would come up with something, but the result came back negative. 'No virus' found. There is a new security program that is trying to run to 'rid' of virus, but I think that is what is causing my problem. Unfortunately I do not know of how to get rid of this 'uninvited' host that is falsely offering security protection. Any suggestions on how to getting back 'icons' back on my desktop?

Thanks for any suggestion(s) that you can think of.

Peter, I don't have a clue but my son will add to this reply.....

Hi,
Try this:
Right click on any part of your desktop, when the context menu appears
hover over (or click) on the sub-option "View".
You should get a secondary context menu pop out, and right at the bottom
of this new menu, will be an option on its own called "Show Desktop Icons".
You can click this to check the option, and your icons should return.
This should be fairly generic across any version of windows, but do let me know if this doesn't work for you.

Another good tool to use is called Combofix. You can download it for free at Combofix.org I run this anytime I think I have an infectyion from spyware and I usually reboot into safe mode to run it. If for any reason you cannot download it in a normal boot then boot into safe mode with network and download it then. The reason for this is many types of spyware will not let you download these tools to help you, hence safe mode because they will not load in this boot. The only changes I noted when I use this is if you use multitabs in Internet Explorer it will revert to one tab which means you would need to set that up not a big problem and it will turn off any screen saver you are using. Other than that just follow the instructions on the program. It is a very simple program to run and let it run its course don't interupt it usually takes 15 to 20 minutes and it reboots itself. If you have any questions you can pm me.

For the icons, right click on the desktop and make sure that HIDE ICONS is not checked.

For the unwanted guest, do a google search for the name of the "program". There are usually great programs for ridding just that one.

Or goto kaspersky.com/shakeitup and download kaspersky internet secutrity. By using that link it is free for a whole year..

Thanks to 'all' for the assistance. My icons are back, the spyware virus as been removed and hopefully will not resurface. This is a great group to lend assistance in all matters.:)
