My problem is my sister bought a new 4 in 1 printer and hooked it up to my computer and now when I try to get on the net by clicking the Internet Explorer button it will not load and says its connecting to a web address that reads redirect.hp.com??? I can only get on the net by right clicking the explorer and starting it without the add-ons running, then I'm able to type a address or go to my favorites to get to a web site. My sister said it happened when she tested the Fax on the 4in1 machine? It never really connects to the redirect site no matter how long you wit for it to load. Any ideas as I have tried to figure it out. Thanks, Victor

Which IE are you running. Sounds like redirect.hp.com was made your home page. Select the tools menu. Select Internet Options. The general tab will open. The first entry is your home page. Trying changing it by either hit the defalut button or type in the address that you were getting. Hope this helps

LandfillLumber, do the right click thing and get the internet up. Run a search for Hijackthis. It's a program that will allow you to get rid of addons that attache themselves to your startup menu. I use it and its always worked for little irritations like this. Just follow the directions and after you get your list of things that is coming up with Internet Explorer, pick out the hp stuff and zap it. Should take care of the problem.[:D]

Well I changed the home page to yahoo.com and it still will not connect to the site. It acts like it is connecting but never does? Down loaded the hijack software but its telling me it can not tell whats bad or good so I'm scared to mess my computer up even more. To bad they don't make these things(computers) out of wood,LOL. HELP, Victor

Uninstall all the software that installed with the printer, all of it. And re-install just the printer driver. HP is famous for hijacking your computer. That is why I don't buy HP anything any longer. I hate companies that install software that your don't want. It is probably their Photoweb Software that took over. It is trying to sign you up so you can upload photos to a public website. You could look for that software and uninstall that. If you need further help, let me know. Sorry for the rant. [:D]

True, Hijackthis only tells you what is coming up on your browser, not what to delete the registery of. If you want to make a file of what the computer says it is getting I'd be happy to look at it and tell you what to get rid of. Of course I know you don't know me completely understandable ..If you want to though its terry@tjrust.com

How does you computer connect to the internet? Dial up, DSL, or cable? Do you have a router/firewall/switch installed?

If you have DSL or a cable modem switch it off, wait 30 seconds, switch it back on. Wait a minute or two for everything to settle down. If you have a router/switch turn it off and wait 30 seconds, switch it back on. Wait a minute or tow for everything to settle down. Restart your computer.

Ditto to what Steve said. He nailed the problem. In defense of HP, they are not alone. Many hardware providers use highjacking in their software also. I'll never have, or use, Kodak cameras or equipment again. Install the minimum needed to operate the hardware.

Well nothing is working??? I tried to reset everything by turning the modem off, no luck. I tried to uninstall the software(I think I got it all off) and still the same problem of not connecting to the home page. HELP At least I can still get to the net without the add-ons on. Thanks everyone for your help I'm really what you call computer stupid,LOL, Victor

If you are using Windows XP as your operating system, you can do a simple restore to any date prior to when you downloaded the HP software. You will not lose any files, but will have your registry back the way it use to be. That should solve the problem. To do a "System Restore": Click START. Click ALL PROGRAMS. Click ACCESSORIES. Click SYSTEM RESTORE. Follow the on screen directions, picking a date about a week before the sofware was loaded.

I know almost nothing about computers ... but... a fellow I know who is a computer geek (no offence to those that know computers) once told me not to use the install disk that comes with the printer (or whatever equipment). He told me to go to the mfg site and download the driver for whatever hardware I'm installing. He told me not only would I get the most up to date driver but I wouldn't get all the crap that somne mfg's put on their install disks. Just my 2 cents worth.

More than likely, there is something in the registry that is telling the browser to run this web page first. And that is what IE is doing. But you have to be careful when editing the registry, especially with hyjackthis. That is not something for the non-computer person to fix. You may need to take it to a repair person, or get a hold of a buddy that know more than you.

As Lou said, the system restore is a good option as long as you have a good restore point. Personally, I'm not a fan of system restore, I've had it fail more than work. But, this is just my experience.

BTW, I can't find hyjackthis any longer. That program saved my work computer from major spyware. That kept re-installing itself, until in found the run registry entry for it.
