Coincidence? I think not

I think we've all used search engines and then get TV ads over the next few days for search engine results. Ie: Search "Window blinds" and start getting TV ads from several window blind companies. Ie: Search for a medical condition and start seeing TV ads for various medications. (Our only TV is streaming services).

We have even had TV commercials start showing up which were related to casual conversation in the room within range of the TV remote.... no web searches ever done.

Well, last weekend I visited 4 pen supply websites. IIRC, coincidentally all 4 were SHOPIFY sites with SHOPIFY cookies embedded in addition to the base website cookies. I keep privacy settings locked pretty tight but on 1 site I had to remove all privacy settings to see if a website issue was privacy, cookie, ad or fingerprint blocking related. Privacy settings restored as soon as I was comfortable that the blocks had no effect except slow the site down to a speed that makes "buying stuff" more difficult.

Guess what? Pilot G2 pen commercials started yesterday.
Coincidence? Anything is possible but sure is suspicious. It is extremely unlikely that Pilot just started G2 pen commercials to our TV without some external information purchased or rented.

I have an email address that was either sold or hacked from a PenSupply company over 12 years ago and over 90% of the email received is SPAM, some pretty raunchy based upon the subject line.

We would get targeted ads in our emails after grocery shopping. For example, if we spent a few minutes selecting canned tomatoes, we'd see canned tomato/vegetable ads. If we put our phones into airplane mode, or turned them off, no related ads.

But, remember, "we are not tracking you!"

I use "Duckduckgo" as my search engine - no tracking. Can't speak to the "cookies" thing and what can happen but that would relate to the website you go to and agree to "cookies". Are customer friendly or just want more money from advertising referrals!

It's also back to school time, they may figure that's why you were looking at pen related things in the first place

There was a special about that on tv. I don't remember which network but it was all about what you experienced. They interviewed people that worked for search engines and social media. That's how they make the big bucks by tracking what you're looking for/at.

I agree with much of your positions, but have one 'bone to pick' (16'th century def.). You critique search engines (which I fully agree with). But then you interject the 'IIRC' abbreviation... So I had to use a search engine to figure out what you meant. 🤣 🤣 🤣 . No opinion, just an observation.

:) The IIRC comment was for the PenTurning website platform of the 4 visited which I made based upon past educated guess & I've slept a time or two since making those guesses.

I get the same with a search on certain websites. I search for one thing and get a sackful of unrelated things, hoping I will impulse buy an item. Ever wonder why the shelves at a checkout are there? Impulse buy.
