I just got a BIG ambonya burl block. Yea me!! anyway I started working with it and noticed that my sinuses started burning ( no mask ,dumb )and the following day I started feeling like death was poking me in the head with a stick. I heard this wood is toxic, anyone else have problems with it or am I just getting flu?

Randy you need to send it to me as quick as possible as I don't want anything to happen to you and being the kind person I am I will dispose[:D] if it for you.

Randy,
Put a mask on and try again. This should pretty much let you know if it's the wood.
I personally have never had a problem with it, so go ahead and send it to Roy.

Randy ..... I'm not the kind of guy who'll try to weasel your BIG amboyna burl from you. Here's some straight advice. I've never had a problem with amboyna either. However, that is not to say you're imagining things. Different people have different levels of tolerance for irritants. In any even, I would suggest the following:

1. Wear a respirator, not just a mask. And certainly not just a
Dust-Bee-Gone mask. Before buying a mask check its ANSI code.

2. Run an air filtration system in your shop.

3. Wear nitrile/latex gloves, long sleeve shirt or a smock. Vacuum yourself off when you are finished.

4. Don't hesitate to contact your physician if you are having respiratory problems. I had a personal experience with cocobolo two years ago and couldn't turn for almost 4 months. I now follow my advice.

I'm certain other will have additional suggestions. Your mileage may vary.

Al

PS Now that I took all of this time to research and answer your question in detail, the gentlemanly thing to do would be to send your amboyna block to me. [;)]

PPS Ignore wdcav1952's comments when he sees your post and gets on you for your creative spelling. [:D]

I don't have any suggestions other than the above for respirtory issues, but the best advice is just to avoid breathing it if you aren't sure. Usign your lungs for a testing center is not smart. But . . . if you are curious about skin sensitivity this is what I do when I get some new wood that I am worried about-- using gloves and all that I scrap off a few small shavings, put them on a band-aid, stick them on the inside of my arm (sensitive skin area), leave it there 12 hours of so, peel it off and see if a rash has developed the next day. I have been lucky that I have never had an lung issues with woods but I have had some severe skin allergy issues. Some day I will use one of those EPA-approved environmental cleanup suits to gather those stray cocobola pen blanks up, put them in a lead-lined airtight container, and mail to some IAP member that can turn the stuff!
