Has anyone made any of the coffee grinder/mill kits out there? I know PSI has a few, and I think I saw one from Rockler online. What do you folks think of them? Any recommendations? What's the best source? Thanks!:)

I made a coffee grinder for my lady about a year ago. I suppose you were going to turn yours though, mine was mahogany with a curved front and a little drawer. She used it quite a few times, and it works well, but it takes a whole lot of cranking. I think I ordered the mechanism from Rockler. I could dig up a pic if anybody's interested.

Well, I ordered one from PSI (the model with the side-cranked wheel), and will have it fully assembled this weekend. Just in time for me and my girlfriends 3 year anniversary!:D

The instructions are a bit sparse on how to build the base, but they work. If I had more time, I wood have designed my own base. The instructions also doesn’t give a very good description as how to adjust the grind from coarse to fine.

The gears within the cranking mechanism are plastic. That was not clear in the picture in the catalog, nor in the description. They look quite sturdy, so I’m not complaining. Just would have been nice to know.

About the only thing that I can complain about is the knob on the crank. It comes turned, finished and attached with a rivet!:( I would have much preferred to be able to turn and finish my own to match or compliment the base. I suppose I could have cut the thing off, and fabricate my own, but again I was up against a time constraint.

All in all, though, I am quite pleased with the look of the finished project, and for the cost, I wouldn’t hesitate in buying another one. But just like everything else, you get what you pay for. Although the final product is attractive and functional, I don’t think many would sell at high-end craft shows.[8D]
