Hi all,
Been a while since I've posted. I am looking for a Closed Ended Mandrel for 7mm and 8mm projects. Penn State says they no longer sell there version. Just wondering if anyone out there knows of an alternative?

Short of finding someone that has a surplus PSI 7mm & 8mm Closed End - "Grabber" mandrel, I suggest contacting Rick Herrell (rherrell) to inquire about pin chucks made to fit 7mm and 8mm tubes.

An alternative would be the PSI Handle Anything Chuck System for Closed End Projects. I think you might also need their Mandrel Shaft for 7mm and 8mm Projects on Handle Anything Chuck along with 7mm Threaded Plug Inserts and 8mm Threaded Plug Inserts. The bad thing is that the plug inserts are single use (consumable) as they are glued into the blank along with the brass tube. (Here is a PSI video that shows how they work).

I've also heard that you can make your own pin chuck by grinding/filing a flat spot on a transfer punch and a cut-off 16 Penny Nail. It gets held in an appropriate collet chuck for turning. Here is a video about that: Woodturning Q&A Hot Glue and Pin Chuck.

Good Luck. - Dave
