I keep seeing the closed end pens and continue to be impressed by them. I think I am ready to give it a whirl, but not sure what I need or where to begin. Is there a tutorial on this process?

HI Brian,

I bought my Closed End/Closed Cap mandrels from Arizona Silhouette. I got the ones sized for the Jr. Gent II which will also accomodate the Jr. Statesman and the Jr. Retro. Right now when you buy any two or more of these mandrels from them they throw in the DVD by YoYoSpin on how to turn closed end pens.

Also, do some digging on the forum. I believe there is some stuff out there on it. Good Luck :)

A good place to start would be to read a couple of articles I wrote for making closed end pens. They cover the basics and show ways to hold the blanks ranging from homemade to commercially available closed end pen mandrels. There are other articles in the library. My articles can be found at http://www.RedRiverPens.com/articles

Do a good turn daily!

I use a pin chuck in my beall collet chuck. Basically you take a transfer punch and file a flat spot in it. and use a pin of some sort (I used a wire nail) and that locks it in place. There is a tutorial for it either in our library or the guild library.

I second that...

I made a couple of pinchucks with my metal lathe, and they work like a charm. (except I hold mine in a jacobs chuck) I can post some pics if you want a visual (I find a picture is worth a thousand minutes of cursing and swearing!)
