I have recently started clear casting. On my first attempt, I poured the resin & hardener into a disposable plastic cup. I sat the cup in a container of warm water to thin the resin for pouring. Whilst I was mixing the resin & hardener, the bottom of the plastic cup melted. I am not sure if it was that particular brand of cup or a reaction between the mixture and the warm water in the outer container.
Appreciate your advice.
Regards

Yea #6 definitely doesn't work - I was mixing up some when I got an emergency call from work that I had to handle. I didn't even have the hardener in yet! When I got back I had a huge mess to clean up - mineral spirits definitely helps

I have a friend that saves the blue false teeth cups that are issued to you if you have to stay in the hospital. They don't all get used but can't be reissued. They are #5. I use them over & over, just rinse them with acetone.

I started mixing in paper cups from the dollar and have not had any issues at all. got 50 of them $1.00, just my .02 cents.

Many thanks for your advice. Never thought that there would be much difference in plastic cups but looks like there is. If I can't get the #5 recycle ones, I will try the paper cups.
I feel better now

Silicone muffin cups from Bed Bath and Beyond are my first and only choice. I have never tried anything else so I don't know the difference, but I bought these puppies a year ago and I have never had an issue. They clean right up after the resin hardens and can be reused over and over again.

Are those just for bottlestoppers? What about pen blanks?

He uses them for mixing the resin. I use the same thing. Mix in the muffin cups then pour the blanks. They work great and easy clean up. They cost a little more in the beginning, but easily save money in the long run. And you never reach for a cup and realize you've run out.
