Will Silmar 41 PC clear have any bad effect on fabric? I thought once I saw a thread where someone made a pen out of denim.

Well you won't be able to wash it out of your jeans.

Unless the fabric is a synthetic or has dyes that dissolve in acetone etc., the resin won't be detrimental to it, so cast away.

I have made many watch pens using fabric on the tubes.I have never had a problem with it.Like John said you just have to worry about the seam. But since it is a watch pen I just use the pieces to hide the seam.

Hey thanks for all the responses. Very great ideas. My idea is to use some ribbon. Has anyone tried that? Might make some nice blanks.

Here is a sample that I made.
On the denim that I made, you will not find the seam because it is turned off. What you see is the natural fabric. As you turn the blank, you are actually turning through multiple layers of material which gives the piece some very unique characteristics.

Here are a couple photos.

A picture is worth a thousand words.
The blank I turned and #3 I added some translucent blue dye, just a little when I rolled the material. The #1, I just cast in clear but I have not turned yet although it appears pretty much the same color by the looks from the cut.
The blue disc is the leftover from the cup that was still liquid 24 hours after mixing. It sat in the shop at 30f overnight. I put it in the oven at the end of the 2 hours that I heated the blanks, 150-175f and it is fully cured. It was probably in the oven for 30 minutes.

The blank #2, I just rough turned the blank and sanded and put a little CA/BLO finish on it. I plan to use CA on the ends after squaring, and then go into a multiple CA sand regimen to impregnate the CA. Right now with just a rough finish, I can feel the denim. It's tough but just has the denim feel to it.
The CA fumes really kicked on this material.
