If someone were to give you, say, $500 as a gift with the condition that you had to use it for something related to penturning, what would you get?

For me, I think I'd get some gear to do casting with alumilite and upgrade my band saw and table saw to do some inlays or segmentations.

Oh DEAR! Decisions, decisions, decisions.....

Do I need a down payment on a nice, shiny 2436? (that would be lathe #4 - I'm running out of shop space)

Um, $500 worth of crazy-arsed burl?

Maybe an insane order from CSUSA? (collector's kits, even?)

Wait! I know: More chisels...

NOPE! I have it: A sharpening machine that automatically does EVERYTHING. Yeah... One that I can load my tools in just like a dishwasher and they come out sharp. Sharp and clean.

OK, well, if there's no auto machine I would settle for one of these:

Cheers!

Wait.... Maybe a kick-butt chuck and as many jaw sets as I can afford with the change? Hmmmmmmm........

well as someone STILL trying to populate my shop with GOOD tools... I'd say I would have get a floor standing drill press! My current HF benchtop just isn't cutting it! And if there is any left over I'd get a combo disk/belt sander cause I need one... :)

I bought a Rigid standing drill press from HD a couple of years ago. One of the best tool purchases that I have ever made. I use my drill press on nearly every thing that I produce in my shop/garage. Very, very useful tool.

well since i'm still only getting things according as i can afford them, i'd either get a bandsaw for preparing blanks, a chainsaw to cut logs for bowl blanks, a new extractor, some high end pen kits and a few nice pieces of burl caps. god i just don't know but i'd definitely spend it on my hobby to make it more worthwhile,

I think it would have to be a Jet slow speed wet sharpener with the woodturner's attachments. There's dozen or so things i want, but I think this one would win out for it's practical purposes.

I'd get a Triton Air/face guard.... the new version... and anything left over... enough filters to last a while.

After finding out the hard way I've developed some respiratory allergies to some woods, I think I would get a dust collector, guess I should have got one along time ago, either that or a spare set of lungs
