Hi gang,
Brushes for applying makeup are popular gifts for the ladies, and they're easy to make. In most store's makeup department you can find the brushes, from a dollar apiece to several dollars for a small set of different sized brushes. I like to make a full set with matching handles.
Look for brushes where the handle is just a press fit into the ferrule, and can be simply pulled out. Most are made this way. Then simply turn a new handle, from a pretty wood, that fits the ferrule. It's really easy. I hold the handle blank in a scroll chuck, but a drill chuck or turning between centers can also work. Finish as you would a pen, and glue the new handle into the ferrule with your favorite glue. Wish I had some pictures, but I'm not making any this year.
While wives and mothers appreciate them, the makeup brushes are especially good gifts for young girls just beginning to wear makeup. It's a subtle way of acknowledging that they're growing up and are old enough to wear makeup. That seems to be an important point in a girl's life.
If you make some brushes, please post pictures as I don't have any to show you.
Merry Christmas,
txbob
