Hello everybody, i am looking for a decent sharpener to use at my shop. I understand that the golden standard is supposed to be the tormek brand but i cannot spend that much money. I am thinking about the record power 8 inch grinder, what do you guys think? Anyone here uses it? Any other options?
Cheers

When you say "Chisel" you mean bench chisels and hand planes then a slow wet grinder is a good option. If you want to sharpen woodturning chisels then the 8" bench grinder is where you should put your money. Aluminium oxide wheels, white, blue or grey if you find the proper industrial ones, remove the metal High Speed Steel turning tools are made of quickly. Wet stone wheels are slow on that kind of steel. If you ever want to upgrade to Cubic Boron Nitride (CBN) wheels at a later date get a bigger more powerful grinder of 3/4 to 1 hp rather than a 1/2hp grinder.

Adding that a good sharpening jig like the Wolverine system or one of the copies is pretty much a must. You'll have to get similar for the wet stone too.

I mean woodturning chisels. Do you reckon the wet sharpening systems are inadequate? I think that bench grinders are too harsh and remove too much material from the chisels. I haven't tried one to be honest so i might be wrong.

I have that Tormac but hardly ever use it. I use a slow speed 8" wheel bench grinder with white wheels. I think the carbide wheels are overkill but am sure others here will disagree. I bought one of those jigs for sharpening turning tools and that too I have done away with. Now I just use the flat shoe and find the grind I need and easily sharpen any tool . The thing is you are not taking alot of material off. Just light passes. I take a sharpie and color the cutting face and after a quick pass I check to see how much I removed and if I have the right angle. It is only when you want to change an angle of tool that you take more material off. I also use a diamond stone for that quick sharpening of my skew because that is my go to tool. I use alot of carbide cutter to get blanks roughed and close then finish with skew. Carbide cutter are easily sharpened too with a stone. If you are going with a grinder then make sure it has slow speed. Some are dual speed but you want slow when sharpening steel.

Nice set-up. Like to have the 80 grit instead of the 60 though.

A light touch is all you need to get a gouge sharp again and it takes a lot of use to wear one down to replacement time. They are a consumable after all. A slow speed grinder, 1,400rpm on your 50 hertz is even easier to control. I have two grinders with abrasive wheels. One is a high speed and the second is a two speed (high and low) and it usually switched to low . I use a wolverine rest system on the two speed. I wouldn't turn down a Tormek if it was given to me but it is very low on my tools to get list. Keep reading and you will get out of the confusion stage and be able to make a good decision for your situation and needs.
